Let's see, where can you set up a farm... not on the mountain itself, needs soil or mud it says. By those two apple trees with the low-hanging fruit? Yeah, let's take that one.

"Soil qualities, seasons, the climate, and the biome all affect what grows well and badly in a region, especially farms. Your farmers will try to determine a good rotation of crops, with higher skill resulting in better assumptions. You can leave fields fallow to allow them to recover, but leaving them too long may cause them to be reclaimed by nature."

The farm plot you just placed apparently would do well with
Spring: Crow berries
Summer: Garlicnut
Fall: Moonlight grain
Winter: Leave Fallow

"You can designate areas for muddying with buckets if you have seeds for a particular biome, but no soil in that biome. Though mountains usually have no harvestable plants, the underground usually does, and you likely have seeds for it."
Now the game tells you this.

Year 126, Week 3 (Early Spring, The Elk)
Oku Ura is full
Aveanaye is waxing

You dig out another large room, yielding 5 granite, revealing a bituminous coal deposit, and set the room to be muddied. A number of dwarves grab buckets to to so, gathering from the lake. Your carpenter makes five beds from five logs in the meantime, and all dwarves drink some alcohol.
The farmer, having built your new underground farm, suggests ash morels or plump helmets all year long; or ash morels spring and summer, followed by pig tail in spring, leaving the field fallow for winter.

Spoiler: Rooms and Zones (click to show/hide)

Predominant thought - Had to drink directly from a barrel recently.

"You can add improvements to many items to improve their quality and impact on your dwarves. Bedding for your beds, for example, will improve how restful sleeping in those beds is."

Try to send someone to catch the eyeless viper, alive if possible.
Make stone furniture for the Sublieutenant.
Have someone make ten units of bedding.
Mine the coal! Take torches, if needed. (Can't wait to see what this does...)
Make five more beds.
Have the smith refine coal.

That should be everything.

Have the axedwarves do that, the swordsdwarf chase the eyeless viper and catch it ALIVE, and the other two military dwarves stand guard. Adds up?

Year 126, Week 4 (Early Spring, The Elk)
Oku Ura is waning
Aveanaye is full

You send Athser to subdue the snake, designate workshop for a clothier and a mason, choosing the farmer to work as the clothier. Will 5 pig tail cloth be enough for 10 units of bedding? You guess you'll see. Oh dear, some dwarves are going to sleep already in the empty bedrooms. The mason finishes a stone table and a stone throne before that, and the farmer makes the bedding, using all of the cloth. The 5 other beds are finished as well.
Shorast is mining the coal vein, revealing a layer of sandstone. Seems there are occasional bursts of coal dust? It occurs that you have no lighting or anything for your dwarves. Do they even need it? Either way, you get six units of coal and begin setting up a smelter, only to realize it needs a furnace to function. You give the mason the order for when he wakes up.

The axedwarves are assigned to chop wood, bringing in 50 more hollow birch logs.

Athser handily subdues the eyeless viper without getting bitten. She seems confused where to put it, though.

Predominant thought - Slept on a stone floor recently.

"Each of your dwarves is different. They have certain likes and dislikes, different personalities, quirks, and goals. Some may like to like new skills, other may be terrified or angered by the prospect of working outside their learned trade or assigned position. They also have different physical and mental attributes, which can affect their actions."

Have the swordsdwarf keep the snake unharmed and unharming. First priority of the carpenter: Make a cage!
After that... I'll let others decide.

You give the order to keep the viper subdued and add the wooden cage request to the carpenter's workshop. The carpenter gets to work after waking up.

begin diging deeper for more ores and more objects preferably of the strange underground ruins type.

begin construction of a surface farm.

have  more rooms dugout in a exploratory/ digging style ( build rooms while digging DEEP!)
