Offer the horns as a monument in the castle, as a bartering chip.

You accept the quest! You are sure to inquire about any equipment upgrades, especially a new axe and boots. Thomas gives you a leather vest and riding pants. He gives you some sturdy leather boots. He also gives you a backpack with some food for the road. The pack also contains a map and compass.

"So, you're an axe man? I prefer a good halberd myself, but I'll see what I can find." He goes back into the armory and when he returns, he gives you a long battle axe. It has a heavy iron blade and a spike on the back. He lets you take a few swings with it and gives you a few tips. Its a bit slower than your old woodchopping axe, but you feel like once you get it going it will chop through anything.

He gives you a horse to use, but says he expects you to bring it back if you can.  You're all fitted out like a rider!

Thomas doesn't think the castle would want the horns for a monument. "You might be able to sell them to somebody here in town, though..." he muses.

He declines your offer of a drink, saying he's going to be far to busy preparing the defense of the city. Also, he says you should be in a hurry! He offers some advice, "I would suggest that you go out the north gate and take the road north to Tollby and then head across the fields west to Frinardus. You could go cross-country all the way, it might be faster if you don't get lost, but who knows what you might run into! Although you've already shown that you can handle yourself, am I right?!" He slaps you hard on the back, nearly knocking you off the horse. "Off you go! Good luck!"

I suppose we head to the north gate then ride to Tolby but before that we look around Picklington for some booze before we go, Lord knews were going to need it.

Possibly, we could wait a day and train? If not, we need to get better. Coining isn't going to work forever.

While you have a point we do need money in order to train if I know any RPG, which means we need to complete a quest.

Head north, and rest the horse every couple hours while we practice hitting things with the axe or something?

North! TO ADVENTURE!!!

But first you decide to grab a drink. You stop by the tavern you saw near the gatehouse. You pay two coins for a few drinks of ale. You hold one of the troll horns above your head and loudly boast about killing its former owner. The crowd is impressed by your feat of strength and skill! You offer to sell the horn, you receive a couple offers, eventually selling it to the barkeeper for 28 copper coins.

A large, gruff looking man approaches you as you prepare to leave. He wears a thick fur tunic and heavy leather pants and boots. He has a long dagger on his belt. He informs you that he is a leader of a band of mercenaries, they are heading to the dwarf lands far to the east. You seem like a man who can handle himself in a fight. Would you consider joining? He doesn't know what the pay would be, they've been having a hard time finding work here in the Confederacy of Pickling so money is a bit tight at the moment, but he's heard that the dwarven coffers are overflowing! He claims they'll soon be living like kings!

What do you do?

Say that you'll join them if you can get their assistance for your current mission- consider it a first payment. It would put everyone on good terms with the King as well.

I second this plot as well! Its always good to have meatshields especially when you are the last surviving man from a village.

Let's think about this first; we aren't actually a skilled fighter, we just got lucky. These gentlemen are mercenaries, and mercenaries conduct gritty, dangerous work, something that would likely get us killed as we are not very skilled at the moment. Joining up with them, even temporarily, will most likely end with us face down in a ditch with our blood misplaced. I suggest we thank him for his kind offer, but inform him we have business to the North.
