In all reality 42 has a point, but we'll just be careful in our first battle, and not jump in, and try to learn. A great person didn't get there without using some extra rungs on the ladder.

Either-way if push comes to shove we can just kick the sobs infront of the horde and run.

I agree with 42. We kinda need to inform the castle anyway, or we'll have quite a high chance of goblins overrunning even more land.

Because it isn't like mercenaries are often vengeful or anything.

Hardened mercenaries do hardened work yes... but they could also get us well on the way of becoming a trained warrior, i think that we should try to bargain for their aid as well. Their assistance would likely mean a recommendation from royalty as well, not such a small thing for struggling mercenaries seeking work. We've been thrust into the role of warrior, we may as well do what we can to live up to that.

Note: That does not mean that i don't think we should go warn the castle, half the point is securing their aid for the journey.

42 think about it this way, the mercs we talked too were somewhat overly excited and hopeful about their jobs. This implies that they are relatively new or "softer" then most hardened mercs since they have a bright look at things to come, with this being said they are probably ignorant of any ill intentions that we would bear to them given we're such a "hero" in the eyes of the land currently. Now that is out of the way it essentally means we can frack their stuff up without them second guessing us immediately.

OBJECTION!

The only merc who talked to us mentioned that they've been having a hard time finding work here, and that consequentially, money has been tight. Them being excited at the prospect of a paycheck is definitely not a good indicator of noobness. And let us all remember, us wasting that troll was a fluke among flukes. Look at the title of the thread. It doesn't say You are an axefighter, now does it? Further, I still say that, experienced or not, mercenaries are better left uncrossed. We should avoid lying when possible, it will get us into trouble eventually.

Objection! I still vote we join the merc band and pillage everything on the way to the quest.

Well, I still vote not joining them and rather just delivering the message as we were asked. We already got nice boots and an axe out of the deal.

I too, do not believe we should lie to mercenaries, not sure when this was brought up though.

Ok, how about this? We offer them work. Come with us, we give them a good portion of our coin and we get saftey AND experience!

I say, maybe, 25 copper coins (we have 30something iirc)

This is a better plan, but something tells me that'd be a pretty small fee. I wouldn't expect them to work for so little. On the other hand, they are hard up for work, apparently.

EDIT: typos...

You inform the mercenary about your quest and let him know that you'd be interested in joining his band and taking them along on your quest to Castle Frinardus.

"Hmm. A goblin invasion, eh? Thats fantastic news!"
You're face must have betrayed your shock at this exclamation.
"I mean no disrespect to you for your loss, but war is business for men such as myself! Your offer is interesting. However, I can see several problems with it. First off, being caught in a fortress like a rat in a trap surrounded by greenies doesn't sound like a good job to me... Speaking of the job, who would even pay us if we were to join in such an adventure? We can't really take the job just hoping that Duke Jarin will pay us out of gratitude! And what if the goblins don't show up at all? We'll have passed up a perfectly good chance of getting work here in Picklington for nothing!"

You offer to pay them yourself. He looks you up and down appraisingly.

"Ah. No offense, friend, but I doubt you could afford it."

You wonder if 25 copper coins would suffice. He just roars in laughter as though you'd made a great joke.

This isn't going well. What do you do? Do you have any arguments for why they should come? Do you want to leave without them? Do you want to join them? Something else?

Just get going. The sooner you reach your destination, the more likely you won't get caught up in another razing.
