Suddenly, the doors to Silph Co's private box suite burst open, revealing Proton, Rocket Executive and acting CEO of Rocket Racing! He is flanked by a pair of Rocket Grunts- in the corridor behind him, more Grunts can be seen tying up Silph Co Security Forces.

"Hey there, Prez! Don't get your panties in a knot, this isn't business. Some dolt screwed up our reservations, so we thought we'd drop by, watch the race and laugh about old times, hey?"

His guards rudely eject a junior executive from his seat, and Proton lazily sprawls on the comfortable cushion, turning his attention to the race.

"Ha! That's our boy Dry Bones down there knocking Luigi around, right? I like his style, don't you?"

Noooooooooo.  That was one nasty bastard of a Blooper.

Crank headbutted his steering wheel in a rage.  He wanted to get ahead here- not be prevented from doing so!  That was going to be an expensive problem.  Blast!

At least he had managed to keep his speed up.

Powerslide to the inside!  Drop the fake item amongst the item boxes!

Pikachu was watching the race from the stands. He would need a sponsor soon, though that could easily be attained through his victory. He was however very upset by the fact that the driver who he had voted for had joined Team Rocket. At least Luigi had pushed Dry Bones back, and there were a lot of drivers in position to overtake him. Pikachu was confused by the lack of Team Rocket here though- usually they would ignore him and make a large racket, but they weren't here when their driver finally made it in. Where were they?

(what are they doing? Is this a random event, or was it ordered by a player?)

Also, does defensive driving help with either racing check in the upcoming green segment?

((Huh. I should probably brush up on my info of the rivalry between Silph and Rocket. All I know is they regularly take over Silph's HQ in the games. Anything deeper than that? (wsoxfan: I dunno, but I'll roll with it if you want to have Pikachu show up at some point.)))

The CEO seethed inside as he watched Luigi drift away toward oblivion. Even watching as the Lakitu Towing folks dragged him back on to the track couldn't calm down his anger. Turning to a junior executive he quietly asked, "Would you please inform the officials, anonymously of course, that you believe Dry Bones to be driving an illegally modified kart? Make sure you can't be traced back here." The young man jumped up and rushed off to do the CEO's bidding. A few moments later the doors burst open and the slime of the multiverse walked through.

"...I like his style, don't you?" The CEO stood up and walked up to the glass screening them from the vacuum of space. Given a chance I'd break through this and destroy all of us. A headless serpent is harmless. Still, that's not the way grandpa taught me. It was always like this. Rocket goons barged in and started treating Silph Co's property as though it was their own. But not this time.

"No, I don't like his style of racing. The weaponizing I can stand; it's part of the race. The callous disregard for racer safety I cannot. Nor can I stand the stench that you and your goons leave everywhere you go." He turned towards his nemesis, anger flashing in his eyes. "Now get out of my suite or I'll throw you out!"

(Funny thing actually. DB is a major supporter for safer work enviroments after his job of patrolling Bowser's lava filled corridors during a mandatory(at least thats what the recruitment officer at his school said)service in bowsers army. Gotta break eggs for an omelette though.)

Also, does defensive driving help with either racing check in the upcoming green segment?

It does not- also note that the Jump is a Shortcut, which means that it is its own action to take it (so you can't drive aggressively/defensively/whatever, your entire action is trying to jump)

(what are they doing? Is this a random event, or was it ordered by a player?)

((just a fun bit of fluff and freeform RP, few consequences and maybe a roll or two for structure purposes. For example...))

[2] Pikachu cranes his neck, examining the stands. The fans are seated on broad, flat stars carefully angled to provide a good view of the track. In fact, the stars themselves are constantly moving, following the action! Pikachu does not see any Rocket members on his own star- maybe they're on one of the others? There are a few other spectator stars zipping about, with clouds bearing spectators passing back and forth between them. There are also a dozen or so smaller, enclosed stars for private parties, Sponsors and the like- nobody appears to be flying between those stars.

((AFAIK that's it, although if you feel like elaborating go right ahead))

"Hey, why so serious, champ? Ease up, have a tasty Slowpoketail. Those Lakitu guys caught your boy pretty quick- pretty quick is how he'll have to drive to catch up now! Ha!"

[6] At that moment, the junior executive returns, accompanied by a race official and several burly guards.

"Mr. Proton, we've heard some disturbing reports about your racer's Kart. We'd like you to answer some questions."
"What!?! But we didn't cheat this ti- I mean, we don't cheat! You have no proof!"
"Mr. Proton, please accompany me and we'll have this all straightened out in short order."
"I- You! You spread those rumors, Silph! You'll regret embarrassing me- embarrassing Team Rocket! Come on, boys."

With that, Proton and his goons are escorted from the suite.

Well, look at that. Staying back had paid off, watching as two of the other racers plummet off the track and the others loosing speed and taking damage, while the captain remains unscathed and close to taking the head of the pack. The battered dry bones managed to cut him off and throw a one liner at him, but the bounty hunter only smirked in response and held out the star. "How about I show you my moves, bonehead" Captain Falcon touched the star to the cart and bolted off in a technicolor blur, holding one arm out with his hand balled into a fist as he neared the undead racer.

"Falcon PAWNCH!"

AHAHAHAHAAAA!!! Mr. L. Laughed uproariously as his Blooper wrecked havoc on the race, then proceeded to unleash a torrent of insults, You fools squidn't think that I could pool that one off again, did you?  How do you like the dust back there, guy who everyone mistakes me for? Well, they sure won't be now!  Hey, Bones!  You're falling behind!  Put a little muscle in it! Swift as a Pelican eh, Captain?  I'm sorry Princess, but your castle is in another spot in this race.

Drive Defensively along the Outer Curve while unleashing a barrage of pun-ny insults!

Vaati is still in the stands near the start of the race but the winds tell him what's just been said by the Mysterious Mr. L.  He shrivels slightly.

Carefully, Bill lowered himself from the trunk of the Rocket Co. CEOs car. Leave it to someone like him to have a 6 foot tall convertible. He landed with a stumble and a groan of pain.
"Can't fall like I used to."
He said, as he struggled back to his feet. Keeping to the shadows, he snuck his way to the stadium, where he took a seat and watched the race.

Rainbow Road- Turn Four

1st      2nd      3rd      4th      5th     6th

Action Phase

Powerslide to the inside!  Drop the fake item amongst the item boxes!

Crank enters the steeply banked curve in Yellow at full tilt, cutting close to the inside as he attempts to Powerslide! [3]+1-1 With his windshield obscured by the cloying Blooper Ink, however, Crank is unable to properly judge when to end his slide! Stymied, he drives toward the Item Boxes, preparing to drop his fake!

"This box is for you, Mr. L!"

The Mysterious Mr. L plays it safe, swinging high on the curve away from Crank's Fake Item Box and Driving Defensively, letting the upcoming Dash Panels push him toward the top of the pack!

DRIVE AGGRESSIVELY INSIDE.

"How's this for 'showing my moves' Captain?"

Dry Bones swings inside, pressing forward with abandon, [4]-1 but the accursed Ink on his windshield keeps him from judging how far inside he can cut- erring on the side of caution, he pulls away from the abyss without gaining any Momentum and suffering a -1 Penalty to Hazard Checks!

Use Item, Drive Aggressively, take the outside

"How about I show you my moves, bonehead!"

Captain Falcon activates his STAR Power, bursting ahead with ONE Momentum as the Blue Falcon is engulfed by a coruscating shield of color! The Invincibility burns away the Blooper Ink, [4] clearing the way for Falcon's aggressive driving to grant him ONE Momentum as he speeds to the outside of the curve!

Blast it, I need to catch up.

Drive aggressively through the loop.

Luigi attempts to peel out, [2] but can't control the Poltergust 4000 as he swerves back and forth across the road, gaining no Momentum and suffering a -1 Penalty to Hazard Checks!

Aggressive driving!

Zelda also puts all her effort into catching up, [2] but like Luigi has trouble controlling her Kart as it bounces back onto the track!

1st      2nd      3rd      4th      5th     6th
Movement Phase

Crank zips through the Inside, dropping his Fake Item Box amongst the real ones! He attempts to Pull Ahead, [3]-1-1 but between the Ink and the suddenly recalcitrant Kart it's all he can do to stay on the road! He loses ONE Momentum as he struggles to maintain control!

The Mysterious Mr. L takes the Outside bank of the curve, gaining ONE Momentum as he hits the Dash Panels! He's pulling even with Crank, but does not try to pass as he Drives Defensively!

Dry Bones follows Crank toward the Inside, [6]-1-1 staying away from the Fake (he thinks.) He flogs his Kart for speed!

Captain Falcon speeds around the Outside bank of the curve, gaining ONE Momentum as he hits the Dash Panels! He swerves, hoping to ram Dry Bones out of his way, [5]+4vs[1]+0+2-1 and crashes into the Koopa at full tilt, sending Dry Bones flipping! DB loses TWO Momentum as he struggles to keep his Kart away from edge of the road, [3]+1-1-1 but the Dry Bomber can't regain traction in time! He plummets off the track, and Captain Falcon easily completes the pass with no loss of Momentum!

"Falcon PAWNCH!"

Luigi and Zelda complete the loop-de-loop in Orange side by side, with Luigi just a breath ahead!

Cleanup Phase

Crank [5]-1 nails an Item Box, [6] and begins dragging a Bob-omb behind his Kart! The Ink washes off his Kart windshield!

Dry Bones is rescued in the nick of time by the Lakitu Towing folks, who bring him back to the start of Yellow and send him zipping forward with THREE Momentum, just ahead of Luigi and Zelda!

And once more for anyone who missed it, if you want to take the jump in Green you need to use the Take Shortcut action, which means you can't drive defensively/aggresively/whatever. Your entire turn is trying to nail that jump (and any item usage, etc.)
