"I heard from the guards over there that you might know something about the bounty on the totems. I was wondering what kind of a threat the totems were. There was a similar sounding event where I'm from, and I was just hoping they weren't related."

Aile picked up the nice black cat and decided to head back to Thoki and Salden, idling nearby and looking for anything to help their cause. She turned to the man Thoki was looking at.

"I couldn't help but overhear, I'm a friend of this guy. Do the totems concern anything important?"

Kaelan puts the box down for a minute, pretending to stretch his arms. He makes the bottom of the box and part of the ground under it gel-like while maintaining their shape, letting the contents of the box sink into the ground. He returns to the box and reverses his magic, picking the box back up.

You follow him down, pretending to lock the door and loosening your weapon.


"Well, of course quartz isn't that useful. But it's the easiest to do, and the only one I can do reliably. I can also create things like sapphires or rubies from this rock called bauxite, or topazes from some rocks... The most recent experiment I'm doing is creating the most expensive gem, the diamond, from baser minerals! It didn't go too well, though..."
He waves at the ceiling, above where the smoke is probably coming from.

"I don't know what's wrong - all the other gems never had that kind of smoke - but I'm not giving up! As soon as I can make diamonds, I can live the rest of my life in peace and luxury!"

He snaps open a box with two clasps and steps to the side, allowing you to look in. There is a venerable pile of quartz crystals, small and large, a smattering of brilliant green emeralds, a handful of sapphires, and a pair of fingernail-sized topazes. On the very top, a trapezoidal jasper, well polished, sits. All of them are neatly polished and cut into multiple facets. The quartzes are naturally gem-shaped and are left as-is.

You fail to draw enough power to do as you want: only three or so gems drop while the rest stay within the box. You pick the box up and discreetly sweep your feet over the stones, covering them up.

One of the merchants beckon and order you to set the box down, and since you worked well they would pay you a small amount.

Mier thinks for a moment, scratching his chin, and then brightens, "Say, maybe it is related to the sort of rock you use to try and make them? Did the other ones come from the sort of rocks that they are found in? But I've heard merchants talk; supposedly diamonds are different from other types of gems, harder and less common. Perhaps you need to try using unusual rocks, like ashstone ((coal))? For that matter, other gems are valuable as well, and if you can make as many as you want, why bother with diamonds?"
