"Oh? So he knows something about the totems?" Salden asked, looking at Jacques expectantly.

Salden eats stew. He offers the last bit to the raven, then eats it if the raven doesn't want it.

I don't really understand all that, but what he was saying was that he was purifying it somehow...? Maybe I could do something like that with my magic; light and wind are both associated with purity, after all. He mentioned iron as well, maybe he could use this process to make very ure iron?

Mier waits for the man to return, then speaks, "I-uh, sorry, I never asked your name. I'm Mier. Anyhow, you mentioned iron as a byproduct, right? If you could make really pure iron like this, you could probably get a lot of money from smiths and merchants, because so much iron is weak and full of impurities. You might even be able to refine the process to make high-grade steel. It seems like metals would be easier to make than gems; they might not bring as much per unit of weight, but if you can make more of it more easily, you don't really need gems, except maybe as a hobby. Think about it, master smiths and lords sending specifically for your steel! You would be the only person who could make it, as well, as long as you kept the process secret."

"Huh, well...I just guessed that name, James. Whenever I hear that accent, no offense, I think of people and the name Jacques popped up into my head."

Eat that stew. Offer some to Nnaranha.

Thoki was rather intrigued by Jacques need to hide his name. "We won't ask you for why you're hiding your name, but please could you tell us why they're hunting the totems? I mean placing bounties on these objects don't seem normal." He was clearly still oblivious to the fact that Jacques was not the man they were looking for, so he tried pressing him for information he didn't have.

Jacques gave Aile a suspicious glance before shaking his head. He wasn't sure what sort of game they were playing, but he didn't like it one bit. Still, they were mages, so it wasn't like they could turn him in or something.

Jacques looked around furtively before whispering to the three before him, "The men at the temple know the namu are magic - that whoever has them can make miracles and cast spells. The armed men are after the totems. I don't know why they want them, but they came to my house in the middle of the night looking for mine. I told them that I was "James" and that the man they were looking for was my fictional brother, "Jacques" so that they'd look elsewhere. So, please, for my sake don't say my real name where people can overhear."

Jacques tasted the soup. It was good, but he had little appetite with all the stress lately. "I hope you three have hidden your namu as well?"

Jacques talks to the strange people he just met, nibbling at a bit of bread.

It had donned on Thoki exactly why this man had taken them out for dinner, to say that he was a mage. He nodded to say that he hid his namu. He sipped his soup, nibbling at the mushrooms that one of them added. It was delicious, but far from spicy enough. He added a substantial amount of dried chili flakes from the small container on the table. He looked up after kicking his soup up another notch and spoke to the new mage.

"So, what can you do James?"

Thoki allowed his shirt of shadows to drift slightly upwards, reforming the collar of the shirt to have a chain of eyes lining it. It was noticeable, but possible to do with real shirts and he was sure that would be evidence enough for 'James' if he was paying attention.

Spoiler: Aile Urien (click to show/hide)

Aile finished another spoonful before gesturing, along with the spoon, towards James. "So it is true then, that those guards were just playing 'orders'! And, sorry if I did...actually say your, um, other name? It was really a coincidence.

And...I am the only one left who hasn't hidden my namu. Was planning to ask Thoki and Salden here, after they did theirs."

She returned to her soup while letting Thoki's question go over her. He was heading straight to the point.

She wondered if she could learn cooking soon.

Jacques turned to look at Thoki a second too late to realize that he'd done anything. "Not much to be honest. I had only discoverd the namu recently, and my magic, it seems to have a... momentum to it. I will try and try many times and nothing at all will happen, but then the power comes all at once like a great avalanche and the world around me turns cold and all is covered with ice and snow."

"Oooh, so a Cold mage," Salden whispered. "I can do Creation, and Thoki here's Darkness. Aile's, um, Fire she thinks? Or maybe, uh, Helping or something, I forget.

Ooh! And how'd you hide your namu, anyway? I buried mine and Thoki's."

Jacques fished the namu out of his apron pocket, saying "I have it right here, safe and sound." before putting it away. It looked like a brilliant ruby, but was as cold and wet as ice.

"The whole thing?" Salden asked, perplexed. "Me and Thoki just grabbed a piece off ours... Did you shrink it or what?"

Inser

The boar grunts.

You think it is an affirmative, but you can't really tell . . .

You spend one point of power, and watch as your nails lengthen and harden before your eyes. They almost look like a thin version of a cat's claws.

Mier

The man noisily comes down the stairs and opens the door.

, you say, trying to convince him.

He nods, then nods some more and says, "You know, that's a really profound thought there. I haven't looked at it from that angle before . . . until now, I just threw the slag out; I never tried to purify it further or such. Very insightful. In fact, let's try that right now! I heard that the merchants are coming tomorrow... I have a few contacts there, so can you buy this list of materials for me? The money's in the not-secret secret coffer under the inner doormat of the basement. I'll be preparing the chemicals and regnants needed, along with buying some larger tools... "

He hastily dashes down a list written in an unholy sacrament between printing, cursive and what seems to be runic letters.

Quote from: List
250 kg basalt and gabbro
100 ferrous (iron) ore
Any rusted metal you can find
One small gold ingot

Aile, Jacques, Thoki, Salden

Aile tastes the nice soup and regains a point of power. Nnaranha takes a few polite licks and goes back to cuddling in your lap.
Salden ditto. The raven on Salden's shoulder glares at him and refuses.

"You're so picky," Salden said to his raven, wondering if it ate at all. "Thank you for the stew, um... I didn't get your name. I'm Salden; I guess I'm not sure I introduced myself either. Sorry about that."
