I assign a few dwarves to defend the "panic room" burrow where the civilians are sent at the first sign of trouble. This is as good a maternity-leave posting as any, as if the enemy gets past my large if sometimes not terribly well-equipped militia and the backup traps then it won't matter so much.

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

Mommy axelord and daddy helmetpicker can be psychologically conditioned to "not care about anything anymore", and "become accustomed to tradgedy" via a scenic kitten waterfall with a 10z level fall in the legendary diningroom.

Once properly conditioned, the death of baby meatshield or even "deathwish toddler advanced distraction 1st class" who follows mommy axelord out to see what mommy does for a living when the gobbos come for goblin christmas, has little to no effect on mommy axelord and daddy helmetpicker.

This is how it should be.

Babies make excellent armor additions. So, yeah, my Military is all inclusive. And the little tykes get to be duct-taped to their momma's.

my last danger room had a waterfall in it to give soothing mists whilst their babies got impaled on spikes before their eyes. Create an all female military instead, you can control population and your soldiers become horrible uncaring psychopaths in the process.
no tantrum spiral, nothing. but some of the combat reports were horrifying

I don't care. Some babies get killed, some get kidnapped, but I value the ones that make it all the more. Naturally they join the military.

I always, always, ALWAYS draft only women into the military, this helps to keep the child population down, atleast from non migrating waves.

If they don't have useful skills and don't have absolutely horrid physical attributes, they're drafted into the militia and do masonry in their off time.

Obviously this game is sexist, the females cancelling jobs to seek babies, always holding them, and even getting the extra meat shield when serving in the military (for the slow ones here, this was sarcasm). Though you could argue sexist against who, can males not take care of babies :)? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lisa-belkin/huggies-pulls-diaper-ads_b_1339074.html

Anyways, I'm hoping that one day a daycare gets implemented; and one where the kids would actually gain a small amount of inherited skill to be useful...if they grow up. Until then, I currently use the most skilled regardless of sex or marital status, mostly due to not wanting to spend the time checking. If I'm aware of someone actually having a baby I'll sideline them though.

Ugh, all this thread does is make me want to try an exclusively male (or female I guess) fortress to prevent such... petty losses.

Easy solution: My dwarfettes become Marksdwarfs, the male dwarfs get an axe/hammer/sword/spear. And I don't care if a female dwarf comes with "great axedwarf". She'll be a marksdwarf.

I have a terrible habit of assuming everything not explictly stated as female to be male, so I end up drafting them out of ignorance. It's kinda hard with names like booglahbooblybah.

I recruit them preferentially, because I like women kicking ass. ;) Beside that, it's all about skills and traits. Babies dying in danger rooms or battle is of no concern to me since there are usually too many of them anyway. And if the mom survives long enough to become a little whirling death machine, the odds of her brats surviving the baby stage get better, too.

Only have one comment on all of this,

My screening process is the same as Girlinhat's, so therefore im doing it right because someone else does it the same way.

although the particular person who uses the same method as me beings up some questions...
