Much like many of you I enrol anyone fit regardless of gender.

It's also worth noting that giving birth in battle is as badass as it gets.

Quote
According to Women Warriors: A History by David E. Jones, "Phung Thi Chinh went into battle pregnant, gave birth on the battlefield, strapped the baby to her back, and fought her way back to safety." (She was one of 36 female generals chosen and trained by female revolutionary leaders fighting against the Chinese governance of Vietnam in AD 40.)

^dwarven mothers are better, they give birth in battle then proceed to use the baby as a shield.

Ok how about a different version of the same legend.

Quote
Phùng Thị Chính was a Vietnamese noblewoman who fought alongside the Trưng sisters in order to repel Han invaders from Vietnam in 43 CE. She was pregnant at the time, and was in charge of protecting the central flank. Legend says she gave birth on the front lines and carried her newborn in one arm and a sword in the other as she fought to open the ranks of the enemy. When she learned that the Trưng sisters had committed suicide, she killed herself and her child.

The ending is even possible in DF.

Crazy southeast asians always committing suicide...

I never had a real military selection process in previous versions, and STILL haven't found time yet to play the new version long enough to need a military, so I've just been recruiting soldiers based on need/skill. I noticed that 99% of adult migrants are married now, though, so I might change it to place women in marksman/backup squads and keep them out of the danger room and train them on captured enemies. Meatshields and tantrums were never a serious consideration until now...

meh, i just think its funny how people complain about military training being too slow, and the 'necessity' of danger rooms.
(not sure why you use them but whatever.)

also, consider the everyone being related thing minor, now most dwarves come with actual skills.

Haha I can't believe this is being asked.

Even in games.  ::)

Dwarf women can be as big and strong as the men, and you might miss out not placing the tough ones on the front line. Plus it can cause miscarriages and kill pesky babies.

Gender is of absolutely no importance when choosing a job, or military labor, to me.

You're in the front line military ? Don't make babies, or at least don't bring them with you into battle, damn it !

Half of my fort's population is babies.
I think I can live with women beating trolls to death with their babies.

Oh man, this one time...

This one time I built my fortress out on a haunted lake; a constructed tower. To start off I only had one militia dwarf, a woman. Naturally, she immigrated to the fortress married, and gave birth during training. Dumbie just picked up her kid and went right back to swinging her copper mace at the air.

A year later, she's still the only militia dwarf. And out on the bridge; a thief! Protect the horde from the skulking filth! I sent her out to take the little asshole out (I had been having a recent string of stolen children, I don't even know how). She strikes it at, it counterattacks. She dodges, and drops into the lake. Drops her kid in the lake, gets out and clobbers the kobold. Being a haunted lake, I order the kobold dumped into the non-haunted part of my base. She goes right back to training.

Dwarven baby has drowned. Oops.

So yeah, she was a little depressed. I was fine with that; one step closer to not caring about anything any more. 'Has lost a child to tragedy recently'. I couldn't fish it out of the lake. 'Has had to put up the miasma of a child recently'. Had to take her off the training regiment and into party mode just to get her out of miserable status.

A while later, zombie baby comes out of the lake. Ha! Now she has to go kill her zombie child. Then dump it in the incineration pit. Looking through her thoughts, 'Has been attacked by the undead lately'.

Later, her child comes up as a ghost. Not violent, thank god, but still haunting its mum. Couldn't slab the little shit either, due to glitch. So now, after dropping her baby in the lake, drowning it, being plagued by the stench of it, being attacked by its zombie, then haunted by its ghost, she goes insane. Babbling, goes and starves to death. Ha ha ha.

I draft anyone who's not married or important enough. My dwarves never get married, anyways, and if they're militia, they're going to have an even shorter life expectancy...

Dwarves use their beards to influence the adamantite to change form. A dwarves beard is specialized in his job, therefore a legendary miner has a much better mining beard then a legendary weaponsmith, who has a beard that influences metals to make armor much more.
This also explains why dwarves can have a city on just a soap pillar, the beard of the soapmaking dwarf causes the soap to become rigid.

Married women don't go in the military. Unlike human females, they are pregnant by default, and you never know when they'll use their babies as impromptu shields. I don't like tantrum spirals nearly that much.
