Haha I can't believe this is being asked.

Even in games.  ::)

To me, at least, the question seems a little different in the case of DF. Here, it's not a question of whether the women are strong and aggressive enough (they are); it's a question of how the lost efficiency compares to the potential(ly lethal) morale hit resulting from the loss of a meatshield baby.

So, although at first glance it seems like a sexist pig question, I suspect that it's more "heartless bastard" here.

As for me? I'm still trying to get the hang of having a well-trained military (rather than rows of traps backed up by magma), I don't need the added complication of throwing away good dwarves based on sex or family status. Particularly since if it gets to the point where ex-mothers start tantruming, I'm probably screwed anyway.

My last 5 militia commanders have been women and all my sheriffs have been women. In my current fort out of 8 squads 6 are led by women (including sheriff and commander). The baby thing doesn't bother me. If anything the babies are useful cannon fodder.

What do you call a Dwarf woman in the military?

Ugh, all this thread does is make me want to try an exclusively male (or female I guess) fortress to prevent such... petty losses.
The modding sub-forum invented sex change drugs almost as soon as DF2012 came out. With a little raw editing, you can now have a single-sex fort with no child births ever while the rest of your civ reproduces as normal.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

found a reason for women not to serve in the military after all... a bug.

I draft anyone with nice weapon skills and I kick them out again if they're in a relationship or have kids. Unless they're something ridiculously awesome then I just keep them in the military. It's still easy enough to avoid a tantrum spiral and the extra dwarfpower is always good.

Also, there's not a whole lot of room for pickiness in a small fort with a pop cap of 50-ish.

If an immigrant comes to the fort with some decent combat stats, it gets drafted.  I don't bother to check under the beard.  Kids are worthless booze sponges anyway, I don't care if they die or get kidnapped.

That is an insane and dangerous plan.  I approve wholeheartedly.
