HOT FIYAH and/or lightning. Ain't nothing cooler than the good ol' fireball, especially not if you have slight pyromaniac tendencies like i do (worry not, i only burn things that are on our own bonfire). Fire also implies EXPLOSIONS, which is probably the coolest thing to magic out ever. Lightning because it's a primal and highly destructive force of nature. Oh, and because you'd never suffer from power outages again.
Believe my, if you try to use a 3000 kv lightning bolt to power a light bulb during a power outage, by god are you going to regret that.
Psh, super good lightning mages aren't limited to megavolts bro. Lightning is just a really big spark, so by turning down the juice I could zap butts without also killing the owners of the butts in the process. Also, by "no more power outages" i mean "make a totally awesome ball of lightning that powers your house with awesome magical electricity". Who wouldn't want an unstable core of their residence? There's just something inherently cool about that, even if it means people poking it and getting electrocuted. :P

Eh? Magery? I've thought about this a long while, actually. I'd probably be a shadow-mage.

It has everything I'd need to be silent, cunning and deadly. Of any element I can think of, it also looks like the best one for defense.
I'd be able to fly about, appear and disappear wherever I wish.
My body would be able to take on the qualities of a thick, black smoke, allowing bullets, lightning bolts, what have you to pass right through me.
While yes, I could easily make blades made of shadow or something dubious, it would be a lot easier to just suffocate my enemy by enveloping them within myself.

Obvious weaknesses would be against my hard-counter; the dreaded light-mage, capable of burning straight through my encloaked flesh.

Erm Failing that, a really Fun magic would be golemancy, the art of extracting and injecting souls into constructs, and the controlling of said constructs. All you really need to start off is a soul stored into a gem. from there, you can just shove one into a vending machine and have it dispense coke, then remove it, shove it into a door, and have it unlock. if you have enough souls, you can shove it into a rock and have it turn into a golem, or you can fire it from a gun and have it control somebody's arm. It's a very fun and manipulative art of control.

I changed my mind from (much) earlier in the thread. Now I want gravimancy; the power to control gravity. By controlling my own gravity, I could walk on walls, hang out on the ceiling, or even fly. If people were to attack me, cue powerful gravity fields that pin them to the ground or any nearby surface (or send them hurtling into the air). With enough power and finesse, I could even move objects faster than light.

>Fractal spells
You would still probably need a power source for them. The version of that which freezes things could work though if it harnesses the energy it draws out of the areas it freezes.

if you were to accelerate something faster than light then it would probably be extremely hard to undo the black hole you created afterward, speaking from a physics standpoint.

EDIT:

OOOH! Almost forgot a personal favorite: Time Magic, especially on a localized scale.

While you can do the obvious of moving your self through time, creating paradox clones of yourself in the process, you could also rewind it different ways.

First, you could rewind the entire universe relative to yourself, so that when the clock is finished moving back you are exactly where you were 5 minutes ago, with knowledge of what's happening in 5 minutes. you could know your enemy before they know you exist.

Then, you can turn the clock forward or backward relative to something else to the point where they turn to dust or a fetus with one blast. that's always cool, playing fetus kickball with your enemy.

Then there's the reversal of your own aging, always a good trait. immortality and all that. Sure, you lose a few years of knowledge, but a good steam punk machine that can insert memories later and you're set.

The problem with time magic existing is all the other time travelers.
Here is the scenario I see happening from time travel:
1. An important historic event happens (such as the creation of the first time travel spell)
2. Multiple time travelers appear to change events for their own goals or protect the world from the other time travelers
3. Even more time travelers show up to stop or help 'previous' time travelers at the event, intentionally or inadvertently causing destruction through fighting other time travelers.
4. Go to step 3

My choice would be Themesongomancy. As in, gaining the powers of that person whose theme song you currently listen to. It would also give me an excuse for really damn gaudy anime-accessory-style earphones.

Of course, the music library would need to be restricted to Shuffle for style. Where's the fun in just selecting Necrofantasia? You have to go with the flow.

Mind magic.

Reading minds, changing emotions, convincing them of things, make them not be able to see me, get them to take off clothes. That kind of thing.

I'm not sure, I don't think I'd fit in well to a magical society, although the magical style I might favour is luck/probability manipulation.

Whether that would be giving other people good luck/bad luck or just messing with probabilities to make really unlikely things happen is unclear, although the former is more generally useful and the latter could be unintentionally hilarious (oh, hmm, today there is a 0.000001% chance of a meteor knocking that enemy out. Well, let's make it happen).

This probably ties in with mathematical magic (which although interesting, I can't visualize how it would work, although someone a few posts up has kindly done some thinking on that) and overlaps a bit with time magic (contrast making something happen by shifting the probabilities versus repeating an event multiple times until the desired event occurs). Definitely a subset of reality bending.

Probability magic would be ridiculously powerful, because there's a nonzero chance of pretty much anything happening.  If you had to know what that chance is, though...

I recently saw Chronicle, and it reaffirmed my desire for telekinesis.  I'm still torn between that and ice magic, though.

Personally, I don't think that probability magic (as well as most of the other super powerful magic people would like to use here) would work. The reason for this is that it would be powerful enough to make you, or anyone else really good at it basically a god. And if you used it to make you a god, then you would probably stop anyone else being able to use it, so that tons of other people don't become gods/screw with reality too much.
So the only way you could use it (and the other crazy abilities like altering logic) would be to be the first person in the universe to come up with it (which while possible seems a bit unlikely to me).

I don't know if this counts. But I once had an idea for dwarf fort Magics I put in the suggestions a few years ago.

Basic idea - Science/multiverse magic.

Caster builds a bridge between two universes and seeks for what he wants to use.

I.E. he opens a bridge with his magic hands, seeks with his senses a source of fire(say a forest fire) and draws from it into his universe to use as a fireball.

Etc.

*If i could find the full article id give it, it was in alot of detail.

Or you make it so that some people never get their powers in the first place - hence, retconjuration.

But that would rely on retconjuration working in the first place and you being the first person to discover it, since the first person would retcon themselves into a god and then retcon that they are the only one who is ever able to use it.
And even then a probability god would likely alter the probability of him finding about threats to his power to be 100% (and many other gods could do similar things), so even if no one had discovered it you would fail.
