Forum Games and Roleplaying / [Suggestion game]Choice of Magics
« on: September 20, 2021, 12:11:49 am »
Yer a wizard, Bay12.

I've been wanting to do something low-effort but fun on the forums for a while, so I thought I'd start up a community playthrough of Choice of Magics by Kevin Gold and Choice of Games.

This is basically a more advanced Choose Your Own Adventure book. The way this playthrough will work is that whenever we come to a choice, we'll take a vote on it and then advance the story to the next choice, and so on. In the event of a tie, I'll flip a coin.

Quote from: Prologue intro
Thousands of years ago, the ancients destroyed civilization with five schools of magic. Each spell comes at a terrible price. Glamor charms your adversaries, rotting your body from the inside. Divination reveals faraway secrets, exposing your own secrets to others. Automation gives objects the spark of life, destabilizing the climate. Vivomancy can heal or change living things, with bizarre side effects. Blast your enemies with Negation energy, forming permanent clouds of deadly fallout.

As a young scrounger of antiquities, you hope to build your ruined world anew with these rediscovered spells. Now you must decide which of these magics can transform your post-apocalyptic society, and what you'll risk to bring hope and light to your kinsmen.

Can you bring the world back from ruin and shape a new society? Use your magics well, and you could become as a god; use your magics poorly and destroy the world all over again.

Quote
Chapter 1:The Lost Academy

You push yourself out the window of an ancient classroom, clutching a musty tome of vivomancy magic, and land with a roll on the cobblestone path below.

Above you, it seems to be night, and you're momentarily confused: how are you seeing stars, when stars have been obscured by clouds for over two thousand years? But then you realize the twinkling lights must be flecks of quartz in the rocky ceiling above, reflecting the light of the magical streetlamps below.

Those streetlamps continued to shine even when the Neighbors' magic pulled this academy underground. They shone underground, while above ground, Abraxas walked the earth and declared that magic was forbidden. They illuminated this ancient place of learning, while everywhere else, wizards were put to the sword.

You still can't believe your luck in finding this academy before the Church did. When you and Tal began following her bounty, a great burrowing wurm, you had no idea it would burrow all the way to this sunken academy and its long-buried treasures. Tal slew the wurm, and its final thrashes collapsed the tunnel behind you—but apparently not before an inquisitor followed you inside as well. He must have been shadowing you until you got your hands on this tome of magic, whereupon he shouted that you were under arrest—and here you are, more or less.

You have no idea how the inquisitor found you in the first place. Sometimes the Church has an uncanny knack for knowing things. You're not a wizard yet, but you're not sure the inquisitor cares about this technicality. He probably wants you dead.

Tal prepares to jump from the same second-floor window you did. Her fingers move to her eye patch, as if she's worried she will misjudge the distance. She hesitates a moment too long, and the inquisitor's crossbow bolt lodges itself in her leg. Tal grunts in pain, leaps forward with her good leg, and lands ungracefully, faltering because of the wound.

"Are you all right?" you ask her.

"Meh." Gritting her teeth, Tal jerks the bolt out from between the pieces of her black leather armor, ignoring the trickle of blood that results. "I'm fine, but I might have a little trouble climbing up to that open window over there. Which is too bad, because it seems like our best escape route." She nods to the tome in your hands. "Anything in there that can help?"

"I'm certain of it!" you say eagerly. You open up Praefata Vivomancia, or "Introduction to Vivomancy," the tome that you managed to peruse a bit before the inquisitor showed up. You recall the warning in the book's preface: the magic of life may have unintended consequences.

Well, isn't that true of everything in life?

1.Heal Tal's leg so we can keep running to the ancient dueling ground ahead where we can make our stand.
2.Sprout wings and carry Tal to a high dorm window, where something's glittering.
3.Part the wooden wall of the building next to us, dash inside, and reseal the wall.

DF Modding / Modders:Which of your own mods is your favorite?
« on: February 27, 2021, 04:28:55 pm »
Seeing Squamous' post about his own abandoned mods got me thinking. Many of us here have made several mods, and there's no "review" process. Generally I think that's a good thing, but I'm curious about the best mods available in the modder's own opinion.

Specifically referring to your own work, which of your mods do you like best?

Mod Releases / [47.xx] WillowLuman's Daleks & Cybermen
« on: April 02, 2020, 09:41:36 pm »
Old thread.

I always liked WillowLuman's Dalek mod. Willow eventually lost interest in maintaining it, so I asked if I could take over keeping it updated. I'm not really a Who fan outside the Daleks, so I wouldn't expect this mod to grow much beyond just keeping it working. Without further ado, here's the old (albeit slightly updated) OP.

*Now compatible with 32x, TWBT tilesets.

Spoiler: Installing graphics (click to show/hide)

Ladies and gentlemen, finally a creature that can exterminate husks! I present to you...

Crashed on a dirty, backwater fantasy universe, the Daleks mobilize to quickly take over and exterminate so that they can rebuild and escape! The Dalek empire is a hostile civ which will seige you (and everyone else). They have no weapons, gear, or items whatsoever aside from their casings, but that is enough. However, if you can figure out a way to harvest their shells you can get Dalekanium, which is harder than steel, incredibly dense and temperature resistant, but can't take an edge. They sometimes send raiders to steal supplies to feed their reconstruction efforts. In world gen, it is likely their empire will grow very large, but stop after a while.

That's the bit you have to find out! Have FUN!

Let the !!EXTERMINATION!! Begin!

And now, Introducing: THE CYBERMEN!

They are uniform. They are eternal. They are legion! And they will make you like them. Cybermen are unfeeling cyborgs who seek to end pain and suffering by turning everyone into more of them. While seemingly noble, they want to remove your emotions, identity, and free will as well, because these things can cause pain. They will show up if a civilized being, wanting immortality, finds an infostamp transcribed on stone containing the secrets of cybernetics. They will thank the god of crafts for it, and proceed to follow it's instructions, becoming a cyber leader.

Well, what will these ones do to my dorfs?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They can convert dwarves, goblins, humans, and elves. Probably some animal men, too. If pressed for numbers, they may even make flimsy cyber slaves out of the recently deceased. Rotten or dismembered corpses are no good, though. The Cyber Leaders basically are walking conversion stations. Do not engage in melee!

How can I kill them?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Try anything that works against armored foes.

On the flip side, finding a cyber tablet in adventure mode can be very fun. Enjoy converting your very own horde of cyborgs!

Mod Releases / Veterinarian golems [50.xx]
« on: February 01, 2020, 02:59:29 pm »
This is just a simple mod made to allow you to treat the injuries of your animals in Fortress and Adventure mode, since there's no conventional veterinary skill in the game.

These golems can be purchased like any other pet. They're very weak in combat, but have the ability to heal wounded animals by touching them. For balance reasons, their ability only works on animals. This should be compatible with pretty much any other mod. Let me know if you have any questions or problems. Feel free to copy or otherwise use this in your own work.

Steam download.
47.05 DFFD download

To install, just drop the provided files into your objects folder.

Now includes optional tiles, so the golems work with 32x, TWBT tilesets.

Roll To Dodge / Roll to Dodge Hall of Fame & Library
« on: August 02, 2019, 01:43:11 pm »
Welcome to the Roll to Dodge hall of fame

This is a place of honour for all the rolliest and dodgiest of roll to dodges on Bay12.
Think a game is excellent and worth reading? Then come on and vote for it. Doesn't matter if if it's short or long, old or new, minimalist or overly complex, as long as the quality is high.
Any game with 6 votes will forever be remembered here.

How do I nominate a RTD to the hall of fame?
-Simple, you post a link to the thread and a brief description of the game.

How do I vote for a RTD?
-You vote. Preferably with a bold +1. When a game has 6 votes, it will be added.

But what if a game sucks and I don't want it in the hall of fame?
-Then you can vote against it, preferably with a red -1

Here's a link to the previous Hall of Fame.

Mod Releases / Primal:A prehistoric wildlife mod(630 animals)[50.xx]
« on: December 25, 2018, 12:00:29 am »
In a time before time...

This mod adds dinosaurs and other extinct animals to the game. These animals can either replace the normal surface animals or exist alongside them.

Features:
Several hundred new extinct animals.

You get to fight and/or train dinosaurs.

To make it easier to deal with all the new creatures this adds, I've included a short .txt guide with the downloads. It lists quick summaries of what to expect when encountering any of the new animals, such as which ones are particularly dangerous.

I've added a personal suffix to every file, so this should easily combine with any other mod. If you find one that doesn't work with it, please let me know so I can fix it.

For modders, every animal in the mod is attached to one of a few creature variations. These currently do nothing, but they allow for tokens to be easily added to every creature in the mod.

Optional werebeasts and animal men are included in a separate folder from the real animals.

A complete tile pack bundled with the download in an optional folder allows the dinosaurs to be used with any 32x, TWBT tileset.

Downloads:

Steam workshop.
Alternate download.

Legacy:
47.05 Main version. This replaces almost all the vanilla surface animals with prehistoric creatures.
47.05 Modular version. This only includes the modded raws, so you can more easily add it into a vanilla or otherwise modded game.

Feedback and bug reports are greatly appreciated.

Feel free to use any and all parts of this mod in your own mods.

DF Community Games & Stories / The Jawa Fortress of Rashvir, Deathstar
« on: January 11, 2018, 03:52:50 pm »

A Star Wars succession fort.

We are an expatriate Jawa clan on the world of Anenu Liceva, known to the locals as "The Planet of Legends". It has been 125 years from colonization. Many factions contest this world for settlement and mineral rights. The Jawas here survive by trading with peaceful groups such as the diverse settlers, Rebel Alliance cells, and the Jedi. They must deal carefully however, as not all the other groups are friendly. Stormtroopers, Pirates, Sith, and others have no qualms about wiping out a settlement to grab valuable resources or a strategic position.

Today marks a new day for the Jawas, as we set out to begin a new outpost.

A trailer has been released for what appears to be a spiritual successor to Jurassic Park Operation Genesis.

I'm looking forward to it, Operation Genesis was great. The premise is building your own Jurassic Park, in a similar manner to Zoo Tycoon.
