Dig down one more z-level and channel out two types of hallways and rooms; One for living space, one for the river. Install windows in each bedroom and floodgates to keep the river from flooding everything. Use some stairs to go under the river to access other sections of living space. Then once it's all dug out and floodgates are in place, pierce that river and enjoy your new semi-underwater living quarters.

For extra fun, do not put doors in any of the Dorfs rooms. If I recall, glass windows can be destroyed by building destroyers/tantrumming Dorfs. Why flood just one bedroom when you can flood 30?

I don't think rivers ever fill up during rain, but 'murky pool' tiles hit with a 'rain blot' will fill up with 1 unit of water.

TERRIBLE TERRIBLE DAMAGE!

DON'T LISTEN TO HIM!

ALL IT TAKES IS ONE WET SEASON:

Ask not how the river can kill you.

Ask, how you can kill the river.

And for that question, the answer is copious amounts of blood. And/or magma. Take a pick.

Dam it and cage the fishes.

And then it rains. Build a roof of bridges over it, or ensure you have adequate drainage.

Adequate drainage into your fort is also a fun idea! But seriously, the biggest dangers I've had with rivers were gators, and my dwarves dodging off the edge of the shore. As long as they stay away from the edges, you should be fine. I stress 'should'.

Yeah, you were right about the gators. One snuck into my fort and made it all the way to my dining hall. It killed 2 war dogs and tore both of my expedition leader's arms off. So...... can he still bookkeep if he recovers  :P.

As far as I know, dead bodies don't mess up drinking water.
I think I've had wells bring up Bloody Water before, but it wasn't from a carp wrestler I believe I ordered my dwarfs to throw several rotting corpses into the well because.

Build some ramps along the side of the river.

Most likely? Either you're going to flood your fortress, or you'll do too much re-routing of water and your fortress dies by FPS death.

Sea monsters would be cool though. Never seen one myself.

With some nifty world gen parameters, even you can have a terrifying ocean!

You all forgot about one more way to kill your dwarves with river: ice. Dwarven popsicles for everyone!

Take a pick.

Preferably one made of steel, because the weight makes it more effective in combat.
