I have a river. So how is it going to kill me?
« on: January 29, 2012, 11:19:17 am »

So my new fortress has a major river (25 wide on average) at the bottom of a canyon. I have dug down to reach the water level, and my main floor is there. I have an area where I hope I can have my dwarves fish from it eventually. So, how is this river going to kill me? Is it possible for water creatures or, if im really unlucky, a sea serpent to enter it? Will it raise in level and flood me during rain? And are there uses for it im not thinking of?

I don't think rivers ever fill up during rain, but 'murky pool' tiles hit with a 'rain blot' will fill up with 1 unit of water.

As for creatures, what kind of place did you embark in? Undead creatures can swim, but I think they need a ramp down in the river to do so?

You're fine unless there are gators.

The main danger in creature-fish seems to be that Dwarfs doing real work find themselves charging the fish. And as such, drowning, while being slapped by a tail with teeth. Quite annoying.

Carp as a creature was nerfed, but unlucky dwarfs will still fall into the river being attacked by them and drown without a way out.

I train all my dwarves to competant swimmers.

Once, this ended badly when I had a fresh migrant wave in the open air pool of 5/7 water and it dropped below freezing.  I have sense built them underground.

Untamed wilds? Badgers.

As for the river... Eventually you'll make a mistake and it'll flood you... and there's the usual "That fish wants to bite me, I'll jump at it even though I can't swim."

Dunno if warm means it'll freeze or not, if it does, it won't be as long as you'd like.
Oh, and the well contamination from the suicidal drowners could become a problem...

As far as I know, dead bodies don't mess up drinking water.

I've had several bodies get stuck in a cistern with no ill effects. So long as they don't vomit into it while dying, you're good.
