Well, i don't think they really needed a kickstarter that much, that was pretty clear from the start.

they have already been working on the game for two years now and are only three months away from BETA. if their definition for beta is the industry standard, then they SHOULD have all features for the planned release ready in three months. so what do they need 80,000 for except paying for themselves and maybe hire a sound guy? if they doesn't plan on hiring additional artists or programmers and it looks like they wont (excluding that poster artist, and really, who needs that!? contributing so they could have money to give better posters as rewards to other people?), then money isn't going to add content. its just isn't a factor.

Just a few off the top of my head.

Multiplayer functionality and servers, hiring a sound engineer (not cheap), being able to eat/pay rent throughout the beta, possibly licensing costs, and credibility.  You pretty much need to get on Steam these days to thrive as an indie, being able to say that over 10,000 people were willing to back your unfinished project can'y exactly hurt your chances.

And hey, people like money.

If they really only needed the money for getting the game going to beta, they probably would've used something easier to get to (Indiegogo?) instead of working with the problems involved in being a non-american company trying to Kickstarter. They made a kickstarter because people were obsessed with asking them if they were having one back then.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

I dunno, quite a few other non-USians have worked around the Kickstarter thing (Xenonauts springs to mind immediately).  Also, Kickstarter has a far wider audience than indiegogo.  It's like the difference between getting your game on Steam or Desura.

I see you guys are really concerned about this turning into an abandoned-after-a-year project. I think that is not going to happen.

The amount of feedback and money they recieved is indeed incredible and overhelming. It's obviously good and bad at the same time.

Good, they have enough money to hire an entire team to work on this game, get new hardware, software and all the stuff they included in their Kickstarter.

Bad, as stated above, it might turn into a game quickly abandoned.
If that happens - let us hope not - but if that happens, I think the community could ressurect the game(again, if they abandon it) if it would have enough popularity, and if it would be released opensource(? I am not good with these things, opensource = game's good for editting by everyone [for me])

The game is appealing to me as a mixture of Dwarf Fortress, a 3D engine, and some 'Settlers' elements. I spent my 15$ + exchange fee on it, and I am eagerly waiting to play it.

I am saying they didn't needed money, they wanted money, and its perfectly fine.

Burningpet, you should go and read their weekly blog on their website and get all the facts.  These guys have been working on Castle Story for 2 years already because they've had regular jobs and the like taking up chunks of their time.  I believe the whole kickstarter is to get them the funds required to turn it into a full-time deal, much like what happened with Conlan's Claim (Unclaimed World).

I doubt its going to go abandon-ware anytime within the next decade, though. Its tooo totally awesome for that.

Sorry, I think the parallels here are pretty strong. Same kind of basic game idea, same completely out of left field internet enthusiasm. Same level of plucky independence. And I'm guessing it'll enjoy the same relative level of success.

So yeah. I'm trying to keep my enthusiasm at arm's length. Some real stretch goals would do a lot to help my pensiveness. I've already backed so it's a moot point.

I find it interesting how people don't like a game that comes out finished and doesn't need/get expansions. Also how people complain about games not being finished when they come out. What about if the Castle Story people just released a really good game with multiplayer support and made sure it was stable? Why is it a bad thing if they don't constantly add content?

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Thats not a bad thing per se, its more the abrupt end Terraria stopped at (and hasn't accepted any offers of other people continuing afaik)

Yeah, that was too much and really sarcastic on my part.
