I had to fight 11 Mechtoids on one of my base defense missions.

2 in the very first wave.
5 more in 1-by-1 reinforcement increments.
and 4 in the final wave in one go.

I was... aggravated. Thank god they give you so many nameless rookies to use as cannon fodder. They basically buy you free turns as you can make them stand in the open to tank shots and give your guys more time.
Are you sure they are nameless rookies? Because most of the time I noticed that mine were all from my own rookie roster.

Nah, you see the ones with the weird uniforms? They're "XCOM base security personnel". You get an achievement if you use them to kill lots of aliens. I think it's "All Hands On Deck".

I think you start with 4 of them, along with a few of your guys. Then you get two more. Then you get another two more. Feel free to sacrifice them, they're not your men.

Welp. Not sure if it's normal, but in my base defense mission, I got a wave consisting of seven five cyberdiscs, along with some repair drones. I've yet to actually defeat them yet. so many deaths

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!

Been reading through this thread a bit since Enemy Within came out. If I can find Enemy Within for $20 eventually, I'll grab it, but even with all the awesome things people have been talking about, I just don't think it justifies a $40 purchase. I really hate that it isn't an expansion/DLC. I bought Enemy Unknown literally less than a month before they said it would be standalone. It feels like a total waste. I'm thinking about selling the base game and using that to go towards Enemy Within, but that likely won't help much.

Enemy Within for $15 here: http://www.greenmangaming.com/s/ca/en/pc/games/strategy/xcom-enemy-within-na/

Enjoy~

I'd love to grab that version, but I can't handle it with my current laptop; I can only play the 360 version at the moment.  :-\

I know that Vahlen and Shen's "maybe we should have improved our gear/research" lines after a TPK are supposed to imply that they're blaming themselves.  But I always interpret it as them using the squad's death to politick and improve their department's position.  Like "hey, wow it sure is tragic those guys died, maybe if we had some better gear... you know, if we had a bigger budget... just sign this paper right here to transfer the funds..."

All those lines have ever done is make me angry.

"Oh I'm sorry! It was only another five days until laser finished!"

Or

"We had no funds and the gray market was basically empty, what could we have done?"

Every dwarf, every dwarven man, women, and child, that comes to our forts will die there; it's truly sad when you think about it. And we ask our selves, why? Why do we push forward, knowing this fate, that we are destined for failure? Because, this game grasps the concept of mortality. Some games you can never lose, but we all stop eventually, causing a 'death' to those game's 'worlds'. Dwarf Fortress gives us a definite end, knowing that we will leave that world eventually, and move on to more.

So, I'm getting better, managed the slingshot operation (the 3) and the village in Newfoundland (it was nice not have to worry about cover for once). I was quite decent for a moment, but now I'm meeting mutons and mechtoids (they hurt and they have a lot of hp  :-\). I'm not sure what to go for next. I have carapace armor and laser, and am building one of the meld building. Should I continue towards plasma weapons ?

I've met exalts. It was nice meeting guys with bullet weapon for once, even though they had lots of hps, lots of guys, and lots of rockets.

Exalt eventually get gear upgrades, so don't think they're totally weak. They'll get their own versions of laser weapons and carapace armor. You can then use these laser weapons you loot from the missions on your own soldiers, so long as you have it researched. Free firepower, ho!

I assume if you let them live long enough they'll eventually get plasma and titan armor. I haven't experienced that myself yet.

Also, the EXALT troopers don't seem to ever move past lasers and whatever armor they have. They lack the industrial base to mass-produce either, and they don't exactly fight tons of aliens to get all the alien alloys and weapon materials for plasma and stuff. They are just very determined and resourceful, and Meld seems to be everywhere so they just went with genemods and stolen/copied laser weaponry.

So I'm on my first playthrough (Ironman Normal, I started one or two other games, but I didn't get past month two before I got stomped), but this one is going alot better despite some early rookie deaths. I've gotten a MEC, laser rifles, and one of my soldiers has even made it up to Captain. Right now, I'm in the middle of Gangplank, and it's going well so far. Other than the fact a Cyberdisk (the first one I've ever seen) popped out of nowhere and gunned down one of my Majors in a single turn.

My only regret is that I don't get many chances to safely run up to something and rocket punch it.
