Yeah there's not been much in the way of tactical games for the past decade or so

If I had to blame anything on it, except I guess the death of turn based strategy games as a whole, it would be the Strategy RPG's trend of making RPGs that don't use strategy but that use the strategy board anyhow.

It has been a while since I played Tactical games... uhh hmmm...

The new Fire Emblem was well received, so there's a reasonably good chance that Fire Emblem and maybe Advance Wars would get new installments.  It's pretty hard to think of much other TBT stuff being developed though.

SHIV's can be pretty handy once they have supression, they are good at just soaking damage and forcing aliens to move to worse locations. You can do the same with rookies but rookies die more easily and them panicking or dying can cause others to panic unlike SHIVS.

Ethereals can 1-shot SHIV's though so SHIV's are less useful vs them but by that stage you shouldn't be needing them.

I'm still in the mood to play a tactical game now that I've won XCOM and am waiting for the expansion to come out. But don't feel like doing another alien based one, so Xenonauts & UFO is off. Anyone have any suggestions? Probably gonna load up Fallout Tactics and go for a melee challenge or something.
Try Silent Storm, it's probably the most X-Com non-X-Com game out there.

Silent Storm Sentinels (probably even better than normal SS)
Jagged Alliance 1, 2, 2,5, Wildfire ETC.

And if you would actually want to play a game with aliens there's also Incubation (Imo the best "Spacehulk" game ever made but that's just my opinion).

Ah, JA2. Good times.

The Volunteer gets mind-controlled all the bloody time whenever I play the final mission. >.>

Heh, never happened to me. Since I play Ironman (not knowing if losing the game means I have to replay the whole bloody game all over again), I put the Volunteer way back, next to the Sniper.

My Sniper just really badly critical-ed the Ethereal, my Support finished off the Ethereal easily. I'm surprised any of you guys actually got the Volunteer close enough to be mind controlled.

To use Rift for Massive AoE damage, of course!

Yes yes I play Ironman as well but if the sodding Volunteer is in the back he can't use his Rift which is the only thing he's good for.

Dual Strike was fantastic. That other 3D spin-off was dumb.

The last Advance Wars was in 2008, there aren't any on the 3DS.

Yeah, I know, I have the game. I meant the fights were 3D, like in Dual Strike.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Do you see what I mean? Anyways, I really didn't like Days of Ruin.

Take conversations about other games to their respective threads, please.

This was barely an aside and the conversation was "anyone know anything I could play like Xcom while I wait for the expansion?"
