It is happening just as he said it would. Back in Trier I still held doubts in reserve towards my great mentor's grand theory on the uprising of the workers towards a fair and glorious future for all mankind. And yet. The French revolt, and the parasites put them down like dogs because in their hearts they know what it means. The Russians and the Dutch fall to revolution from the very Old Guard themselves, because without the kind of absolute power they crave nothing will ever be able to stop the people's revolution. Even that leaves their survival in doubt.

None have really taken up the banner of the cause, the real cause. They proclaim a desire for liberty, when really they are seeking equality. Equality with the parasites who live off of their labors and refuse to do their own true share. I cannot blame them for the mistake, as it is exactly what the parasites of the world seek to put in their minds. The socialist cause has been around for decades, and my mentor's far more pure breed of it for a shorter time, but it is now that I think the world shall become unstable enough for the people to demand their share.

I don't think my mentor has gone public with his ideals yet. I almost fear what will happen when he does. He never did warm up to me in the end, and I guess I can't blame him for believing the priesthood is an institution of the parasites. I hope I can do what I came here to do and change their minds, slowly but surely, before the tide of the people's uprising drowns us all. I can make them change, make them understand, like my mentor made me understand. Carefully.

1846 approaches, and the people will soon know what it is to never have to starve, never have to suffer, to never have to want again.

On one point alone I hope that my mentor was wrong. I hope that God is out there and he is on our side as we try to climb back to Eden.

I hope it's not too late for us.

As the sun was setting behind the ancient Pyramids of Gizah, Oberst Sheb was kneeling down for the headquarters daily service. Beyond the vicar's words and the smell of incense, Sheb could hear the cries of the Moors and the smell of blood. Today, had been a small step for his campaign, a giant leap for the Christ.

Oberst Sheb didn't care about what the Cardinals were saying in Rome. No matter how much they babbled about "Thou Shalt Not Kill" and "A war to end all war", he knew that they were mere men, and their words couldn't convince the Moors to see their error and rejoin in the one true faith. Those people only recognized truth when they had a rifle pointed at them and sometime even not then. Sure, killing his Brothers was a sin, but by doing so he saved them from the greater sin of heresy.

Indeed, everyday he thanked the Lord for the fact that the Church had finally decided to flexes its muscle again, ending centuries of torpor with a new Crusade.

As he was leaving the Chapel after the service, Oberstleutnant Schramm, the Pontifical Zouave's commander arrived and saluted.
"All those that refused to convert have been locked inside the old governor's palace sir. What shall we do with them?"
"Kill them all, God shall sort his own."

Nicely written! Is anyone else missing the picture from December 5th 1842 (close to the top of the post), though?

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Top notch update, as usual.  Of course, an update means I have to write one of my own.  So here it is, in a form that I believe I like.

On the topic of my Civil War Adventure, I just jump on their reinforcements now, and have tied up the large armies in occupations of low liferating provinces.  Hopefully, it will weaken them sufficiently for Operation: Megadoomstack to work.  Is there a way to abolish slavery without the Civil War?  Or just make it not happen at all?  It takes valuable time from beating up Mexico.

Entry 2

Egypt, land of the pharaohs and their long forgotten artifacts, covered now by the sand of this hot and dry country. I came here a year ago to make certain that the Holy Land would be taken, and hopefully this war will end soon.

Well in truth, there is more to it than that. There have been troubles in Roma as of late, conservatives and liberals fighting one another openly in the streets sometimes. Rather be here near the land of Christ than in the home of the pagan gods...

In other news, I've been told about a recently found tomb of a king. I was invited to see it for myself, but I've declined, too busy with the administration after all.

The streets are crowded with ragged people outside of the San Clemente and Cardinal Cicero can be seen on the steps giving a passionate sermon. His face is red from the effort of being heard over the din of the crowd and he moves his arms as he speaks, sweeping his robes left and forth.

Why does the Holy See allow the good Christans of Holy Rome to starve and die in the streets while it's vast wealth goes into imperialistic wars in Africa? Why does they allow good hard-working Christans to be forced into poverty by godless industry? Are we to become a nation of atheists and capitalists like Russia and the Netherlands have? Are we to give up heaven simply to claim more of the Earth? The Pope is God's representitive on Earth and is infaliable, however he is also sick. It is not him who has ordered these monsterous acts be performed. It is the corrupt Cardinals who even now act as generals in our unjust and evil wars. One of them is an agent of the devil and is leading us astray! We must force him out!

The crowd begins to cheer when suddenly a shot is heard. A man in the front of the crowd, wearing a broad brimmed hat and carrying a revolver has shot the Cardinal. The crowd roars and the man is beaten to the ground before he can utter a word. Luckily the bullet has only hit Cicero's shoulder, and after a quick operation he is deemed out of danger by his physicians. However the message is clear to him; whoever is the power behind the liberal movement wants him out of the picture...

Each liberal cardinal recieves the following message:

"Attention liberal scum!  I know what you are planning.  I expect more funding for the Jesuits, or I shall have to reveal your plans."

At first I was like, BAKSHI! Then I was aww it's not Bakshi.

Country seems to be well on its way to industrialization. We seem to be doing well with the war but the Egyptians still field quite a lot of troops there. Exciting.

Bakshi is good but is lacking in funky whip songs.  The war is won as long as I don't make a terrible mistake like attacking them head on.  I modded the disparity between western and non-western armies to be narrower, and Egypt especially is a match for many western armies of similar size.  If Egypt avoids historic pitfalls like losing the Hedjaz and Syria, and falling to colonial interest, they'll probably be a great power when they industrialize.  Fortunately for us they are well on the course of failure.

Thanks!  The link somehow broke and is fixed.

This is a great AAR. Can't wait for the next update.

Thanks for reading  :D

Yes, Cardinal Neo.

Alright then, I've included Cardinal Neo in the Cast of Characters.

Each liberal cardinal recieves the following message:

"Attention liberal scum!  I know what you are planning.  I expect more funding for the Jesuits, or I shall have to reveal your plans."

 :P

Cardinal Jack gets one back:

"Tell you what, Cardinal.  You keep what you know to yourself, and we won't tell everyone in Rome who the Admonitor is.

P.S.  We know you're laundering from the war fund. Please stop that."

OP is updated with the Cardinals' fine tales and the incident involving the infamous Sergeant.  I also added a link to that book referenced in chapter 3.  I've started reading a little of that and other books of the setting to get a feel for things.

I've had a busy couple of days but the update is in progress, I've already played through a few years and should be done soon.

Cardinal Jack Euchre sits at his deck, holding the recent note.

"Sigh, it seems that cooperation is out of the question.  If only my fellow cardinals weren't constantly trying to pamper the rauble, my Order would have enough funds to properly care for the poor.  Do my brothers not know of the Order's great strides of charity?"

The cardinal summons for an aide.

"See who is loyal, and keep the others under observation.  And tell his Emminence to stay frosty."

Dearest Seargent Sheb,

My congratulations on your success in Egypt.  You are truly a champion of Christ, the type of man that I had thought died with the Crusades.  But as we have resurrected the Crusades, so have men such as yourself been reborn.  You simply must come visit me sometime, as it should prove most profitable for both of us.

Very nice Sethcreiyd, love the story.  I wish I had someone to talk to about this game, it's really cool, but really complex.  A while ago, I tried to find other people who liked this game and knew a lot about it, but there were so little that my Vicky2 thread faded into oblivion.  Yet, so many people like the game because of you.  Care to give a bit of advice to a newb?

Anyway, nice job on the LP, I congratulate you for your efforts.

A stranger approaches Cardinal Euchre in the streets as he walks home one twilight evening.

"Take care with your plans, Eminence.  The walls of Italy have eyes and ears."

Before the Cardinal can inquire, the stranger is vanished into the alleyways.

I appreciate the kind words.  Victoria's definitely complex, and underrated.  It probably didn't help that the first release was so buggy, but there's Paradox.

I think it got a bad rap with the rebels (problems with rebels spawning too frequently and inappropriately), this was a period of history where armed rebellion was a relatively common occurrence.  And ideological rebels in V2 can be a very good thing if you have a crummy government type or want to switch to another the quick way.  Just keep your troops from interfering with the rebs and you have a good old fashioned coup.  You can even steer their armies to your capital with careful troop placement.
