I for one think the best way to off-set your nondorfiness of trading with the elves for cloth for the time being, would be to send a legendary military dwarf wearing nothing but clothes made from the textiles bought from the elves, to greet their caravan once you set up a way to produce your own cloth. For added irony, you could consider killing them with a weapon made from non-kosher wood.


Then put said clothes (minus dwarf) into a room, and flood with magma, with maybe an elf or two thrown in for good measure.

I'll usually take a little cloth from them (by trade even) at the start of a fort -- I don't bother with cloth industry, bu you always need some for moods.

That's the thing though. I don't want to kill them because I want them to bring as much cloth as possible. That way my dwarves can walk around in ☼fur-clad purple coats☼ and with ☼oversized white hats with feathers in them☼.

anyway, all the 50 or less db items go out, 1000+ db barrels of Gnomeblight, etc come in.

Okay, so you've made some mistakes.  It happens to the best of us.  You can fix this.

1. Get some Pig Tail seeds.  Grow your own cloth.  Seriously, you mentioned having 39 dwarves, you can handle setting down a 4x4 plot for pig tails.

2. Start stockpiling wood.

3. Make a room deep underground.  Build wooden walls and a wooden floor.  Fill it with wooden items, or even just piles of wood.

4. Start a war with the elves.  Capture as many as you can in cages.

5. Dump them in your new elf hell.

6. For bonus points, line the room with weapon traps filled with wooden training spears.  This puts even more wood in their faces, and also trains them up for bonus step 7.

7. Release them unto the clowns.

i like to have cloth industrie too (bags are usefull and if i am on ot i can make other things too) whoever it is better imho have your farms for dye and cloth, that way once your dwarfs are trained it worth much more as if i am rigth cloth and dying of clothe have both hidden quality modifiers ...
