Athor searched for the cheapest place to stay in the bottommost parts of
the fortress, after all that was where he belonged,
heck in this place the miners probably needed an huge crew to make expeditions into unmined territories
so why not just sign up for mining again.

Since Grig hadn't been immediately posted to his old job, he could pass off as someone else now!

Yet, he still chose to try and find whoever is in charge of this place to ask what jobs are needed here. Damn his sense of duty!

(In the event that there is noone in charge/he gets lost, he finds an inn for some ale and a place to stay.)

The river is a bona fide (at least, it looks like) underground river, but artificially widened so it can hold two or three canal boats abreast. at both ends of the hall, the river gets into tunnels, which boats emerged from or disappeared into, carrying all kinds of goods and materials that can be reasonably procured underground.

Upstream of the river is quite well developed. Tunnels lead to pockets along the canalized river (or branches off it), which is adopted for farming. Some places are irrigated very intensively, with advanced water supply mechanisms. The river can be traced back to a large watefall, which waterwheels, turbines and such are built off it to harness its immense power, supplying mechanical power for numerous mills and industries.

Downstream is a less developed scene. It is practically a gigantic mine, with shipload of ores and rock moving up the river, pulled by gangs of dwarves. Luckily the sturdy builds of dwarves are ok for such a job. The river leads off to a chasm, and it looks like it is one of the major source of invasions, as evidenced by a number of guard posts and even a ballista with several bolts ready.

The cheapest accommodation available is not an inn, but an homeless shelter built between the downstream section and the hall, opposite the main barracks. It is very noisy, due to the traffic present and dwarves doing their drills, and the absolute crowdedness of the place does not help, but at least it is a bed. Each night of accomodation costs 5 tin coins - or shinies*, as they are called by locals - if you have them, but they don't evict you provided you prove to them you have no money.

*It goes without saying that you all have 60 shinies in hand.

Oh well... must make the best of it... There must be some hunting and such going on at least to fuel this place, right?

This game is not going to die, of course.

A well established fortress. Not too different from the Mountainhomes then besides the size and the ludicrious amount of decoration. Course there was always a reason for such beauty...Perhaps the dukedom was rich or they were just trying to hide some hideous thing...Best to get settled in...

Look for a cheap inn to stay in then look for a mechanic's workshop/factory/assembly and ask for a job.
You stayed in the homeless shelter for the time being, unless you pushed for a better place to live in.
[1] As you go door to door in the industrial district, you are rebuffed. It seems that they are looking for an "engineer charter", and sadly you were not formally educated as an engineer. You can of course take the test, but that would take copper coins which you clearly lack.

[4]Luckily, no cod in your food.[/b]

Status: 55s, Fine, Well-fed, got Alcohol, unemployed

This... this this this... Is different.
The lean dwarf's eyes scanned the fortress, seeing ecstatic dwarves, a thriving trade industry and impressive architecture. But this was not all, for he saw that it was too good, nothing could be this peaceful. Every moment he would see a shadow behind a corner, the glint of blood slick ivory, the distant sound of a demonic trumpet...
Get a layout of the place, wander around the side passages and towards the rest of the fort. Inquire with the engraver's guild if they are looking for more workers on the way.

You got maps of the region engraved every second turn of the fortress roads. Only publicly available roads are shown, but good enough for any traveler.
[6]You found the local engraver guild and they said they always need another hand. [1]Unfortunately you blundered at your first few moves at the entrance test and you are now employed as an "initiate" with a daily income of 15s, just enough to cover your daily needs.

Bael was infuriated the moment he saw the entrance. He managed to calm himself down before he insulted anyone, but this crime was not going to remain unpunished. The ones who did this were going to regret it. The blacksmiths of this city were going to understand you cannot mess with beautiful, perfect gold.

First, he had to find them. Then, he was going to join them. And then, he was going to take control of them. Yes. It was a good plan.

Find the blacksmith guild or the best blacksmith in the city if there is no guild.
[6] You found the local blacksmith guild... and found it is fully adorned by rose gold. You got into a very bad mood and break a few things. [5]You cannot pay for them, of course, so you fled the scene. You were lucky to encounter no lawman for the rest of the day.

[4] The miners seemed to need more hands than it is currently employing. [1] You broke your pick on the first strike. Poor you, but this make you an initiate with a daily wage of 15s and you are posted to dig out rooms which damage is not deemed important.

[4] Manager? there are many managers. manager of immigrants, manager of trade, manager of canal, manager of food supply... so on and on. You bump into a man who seemed to be very interested with the crossbow on your back.

"A hunter?"
"Yes, sir. But there seems to be very little to be hunted."
"What little! vermin is rampaging through this city, y'know? Listen, I'm from the militia. I have approximately twenty men working under me. Maybe you can join a group to hunt those vermins!"

And so, you followed that dwarf and he introduced you to a group of dwarves. They wear some assorted arms - some got metal plates, but some are in clothes. You know later that everyone have to provide his own equipment, as the best equipment is left for the real military. You are told to join and work with them for the rest of the day.

It turned out "vermin" are actually goblins and kobolds rampaging around the lower reaches of the fortress, especially along the access to mines. You are told to hunt for them and keep the road safe. [5]The sergeant of your team is pretty impressed with your work - you shot a few goblins in their head - and recommends your promotion to a private first class, wef today, for your efforts. a PFC pays 30s a day, enough for decent housing and food, but you are still staying in the homeless shelter for the moment.

Status: 85s, Fine, Well-fed, got Alcohol, PFC

[4] Who is in charge of this place? Well... depends on how you are asking. As you see, there are more than enough managers for the place. You stumbled on the managing office and found a lot of dwarves scurrying their hands on their tables. And endless stream of dwarves carrying documents in and out of the office aside, surprisingly it has a reception counter. You asked the receptionist for a job opening - and he lead you to his manager, who lead you to his manager, who lead you to his manager. You dropped you jaw at awe at the dwarven bureaucracy at the job interview he gave you immediately, [5] but at least he give you a job as a scribe I. At least better than Scribe II, but it only carries 20s of pay every day.

Vegetables and meat seemed to balance your moods. But the homeless shelter is not giving you anything besides that stew...

Status: 75s, Fine, Well-fed, got Alcohol, Scribe II



New Rule:
Living quarters:
Your living quarters and food serve as a limit of your happiness.
Living in the homeless shelter will limit your happiness to"fine" as the maximum. Anything lower than this will incur penalties to many, many rolls.

As well as bed, dwarves of course need food. The homeless shelter also provides as stew of various plant and animal products, which no dwarf can really discern. Sadly, no alcohol. Without alcohol, you mood will drop one step each day until you reach "very unhappy". (Alcohol for the first day is free, you lot heard, and get drunk.) A day's worth of Dwarven alcoholic beverage will cost you 10s.

You may buy luxuries to increase your mood, or tend to your tastes...

"Well... I guess we know where the place gets its name from," Turk observed when he arrived at the entrance with the rest of his traveling companions. Though, the rest of them seemed a bit too busy to notice that little bit of litotes, as far as he could tell.

Not that he could blame them, really; this was much different from what any of them had imagined. Sure, it was a Dukedom, and that meant something, but Turk had still been expecting something a little less... well, less. The Guildmaster had told him that he would be starting a new branch, for Armok's sake! It seemed a bit of a stretch to imagine that this place didn't already have a branch.

Of course, the Guildmaster had been getting a little long in the tooth, so maybe he'd gotten this place mixed up with some other outpost. That would actually be pretty apropos as far as Turk's life was concerned, getting sent off to the wrong mountain because some near-sighted, addlepated greybeard's glasses were smudged.

Turk sighed. Either way, the first steps would be the same, and there was no point in standing around and waiting when there was work to be done.

"On the bright side," he observed as he set off. "I doubt I'll get put in a pit polishing rocks somewhere."

Search for the local branch of the Cheesemaker's Guild and ask to be put to work. If there isn't one, try and find some administrative personnel and ask about setting one up.

Snobs. They wouldn't know a legendary mechanic if one built an automated mine in front of them! Guess I'll have to go to something else with my skills...As well established this fortress is, the caverns must still be dangerous. The military must be needed there...And my skills as a mechanic would be useful, to make machinery and the such.

Apply to the militia/military as a combat engineer. Say that I can build machinery to aid in the caverns.

note: Hope you can see that. If you do not respond, I just let you go into suspended animation. If you do actions, you'll have to eat and drink.
You can change (or inquire about that) your residence or food if you like to. You can always browse for wares or exotic food in the hall. This mainly affects your mood if you choose to consume (that is decorate your home with) them.


Also, I can confirm one or two player has encountered one of the main story lines that I've planned for this.

Well that was alright, I suppose...

Continue to work at his job, using any spare time to ask around to see how expensive/where he could get some better armour and training.
