I was raised in the deep country myself, but my dad happened to be proficient at cobbling together fascinating machines out of scrap and elbow grease.  He made some of the most amazing stuff out of junk and I guess it inspired me as a kid.  I originally wanted to be a mechanic or something like that because I watched him fix and build things, but then computers caught my eye.  It's all history from there.

A good example of the sort of stuff he'd make was a ring roller / cutter.  When he found out that I was interested in making chain mail and showed him how it was done / how tedious it was, he took some scrap metal, an old motor, and a some metal machining tools and made a contraption that would wind and cut wire into rings, ready for use.  Awesome.  I couldn't help but grow up liking to tinker.  That and he led me into other interests like roleplaying in that he used to take part in civil war reenactments.  Perhaps a bit more mainstream, but it's the same thing under the hood.

Oh, also: I've read Dragonball in English, French, and Japanese, and I own the first volume of Naruto in French, Japanese and Russian.

My current reading projects include the entirety of Dickens and Shakespeare.  In my spare time, because that stuff isn't helpful at all for either major >_>

Everyone in my family are as un-nerdy as you can get. My brother and mother are social butterflies, business(wo)men, and professional dancers.

My dad may have died before I got to really know him, but he was an ultra-geeky programmer/banker.

The genes definitely rubbed off on me.

Back in the days of playing World of Warcraft, I managed to tame Loque'nahak when I was the same level as him and in tattered greens.
I was level 77, he was 77 (Elite), ie. as an elite he is more than a match for a similarly leveled player.
Freezing Arrow!
Loque'nahak is frozen.
I begin taming Loque.
He breaks free of the trap and stuns me using pounce. I take ~3000 damage, having just on 11000 at full health.
The stun breaks the taming. FUUUU
I try to Feign Death to get him off me while I wait for Freezing Arrow/ Frost Trap to reset, but he resists. FUUUUUUU
He beats me about, taking me down to 87 / 11554 hp when I finally manage to get a trap down, which he promptly runs right into.
Start taming again; he breaks free with half a second remaining on taming - runs toward me to hit, and then becomes my pet.

He and I had many adventures after that. I remember confusing nubs in Warsong by using Spirit Strike while I was Feign Death'd and Loque stealthed - they thought they were being attacked by a Boomkin but in reality it was Loque leaping out of stealth and beating them to shreds before they realised.

My real nerd cred would be the fact I can program a friggin' Super Nintendo. I know I would swoon meeting someone else who can, and real nerd cred comes from knowing/having things that are awesome to the smallest number of people possible.

I beat ME2 on insanity.
And i constantly brag about me beating games on hardest difficulties. Took challange of Fallout 3 now. Running out of ammo:P
And i try to be good character, so no stealing.
