UFO: Enemy Unknown (also known as X-COM: UFO Defense and X-COM: Enemy Unknown)

Pretty self explanatory to me...

Poor example on my part. I'd forgotten about the subtext

I like the Six Echo suggestion.

I assume in this universe the radio contact was disclosed as unexplained and unsignificant, but in secret the top government agency managed to make sense of it and it's bad news. The form a secret international alliance under the code name Six Echo to research and deal with this menace.

Maybe the message was the last warning of a civilization consumed by the aliens, heck it could even be the sectoids before they got assimilated.
Good explanation. I'm liking the name more and there seems to be a lot of support for it, though it still doesn't fit perfectly on its own, it would seem.

I don't feel like anything about first contact would be good, because the game will take place over several years with a lot of alien encounters; I think that just 6EQ or something would be fine.
Agree on not wanting to emphasize first contact. That kind of name can sound good (though maybe a tad cliche), but isn't quite appropriate for the long-term setting.

6EQ has the benefit of being simple.

Honestly though I like just "Six Echo" by itself as well.

It, however, describes NOTHING about the game itself. It's fine for niche games, but it reduces appeal.
Actually, on its own, it makes me think of Delta Force from the days of yore.

"Dwarf Fortress" - it will involve dwarves and building
"Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead" - it involves something post-apocalyptic
"Dungeon Keeper" - it involved underground stuff, and will probably be a sim of some kind

You get the idea.
Yeah, that's the difficulty of going with Six Echo, it would need some form of subtitle and may get somewhat long. As CognitiveDissonance says, reaching beyond a niche audience requires a name that at least hints as to what it's about. I'm hoping to eventually make the game bigger and more popular; while not necessarily apparent in its current state, once all commands are mouse-accessible, the HUD is overhauled, and sprites are added, it will have a wider appeal, and needs a suitable name to help push it along.

How is the randomesque global campaign, events and levels coming along ?
Still in the research/mockup stage. I have some mockups ready, but I'm waiting for a chance to publish that blog post.

On the model of "Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead" , maybe something like "Annihilation : They've found us" ?
Or something approaching, a very short title of one word or two that must be catchy enough (the biggest difficulty indeed) while accurate to the content, then a subtitle that while not necessary can contribute in building some atmosphere about the content.

Well, I'm glad we've finally narrowed down our search by nailing down the end cases. Now we just need something with a bit more information than the first, and something like the second but with less of... everything.

So. . . Six Echo: Earth Defence Force. Or Six Echo: UFO Defence.

What about X-Team?

So. . . Six Echo: Earth Defence Force.
Funny, I was thinking about that one just 30 minutes ago. (Though I must admit, I'd spell it with an 's' ;)) Was planning on adding it to a write-up in a little while covering the general ideas so far with some more input of my own.

For what it's worth, I asked my girlfriend on this. She is a published author and an editor, and has a pretty good feel for names and such.
She supports Six Echo, but definitely not the full spelling of the signal. And it does need a support title.

Earth's Defense Force, or EDF, is a name that has been thrown around liberally in sci-fi video games, but nobody has picked up on it for a title (at least that I know of). So that definitely works.

I *personally* feel that Earth's Defense Force is simpler, and kind of holds the name back, but I can't  quite think of anything better. At least yet.

Six Echo: Earth('s) Defense?
Six Echo: Earth's (First and Last) Stand?
Six Echo: We should have listened?

Signal Inbound
Alien contact
The third race
UFO interception
...

Earth defense force sounds to generic to me. Also, a quick google search reveals it's a series of Japanese third person shooters.

The problem with Earth Defense Force is that there are already games using that name if i look on google.
Would defeat the point in making the game name unique if X@COM is too much reminding of XCOM.

But it could work as a subtitle
