After being annoyed by constantly needing to make more charcoal, I've come to one conclusion.

Do not be alarmed.  This is completely natural stage in the healthy growth of a DFer.  If you seek magma for longer than 4 hours, consult Necro910.

I've sought magma for a few days actually.  It's a long, ongoing project, involving the construction of lots of iron screw pumps, oxidane (DHMO) reactors, and trying to work around the natural caverns.

My dwarves keep telling me that, when they've finished constructing the walls for my Oxidane/DHMO reactors, that an object is blocking the construction of the wall.

Well yeah.

THE F***ING WALL YOU JUST BUILT IS!  DUH!  STOP TRYING TO BUILD THE SAME WALL TWICE!

Despite the fact that dwarves can construct a massive building that spans dozens of floors and is supported by a single floor attached to a pile of sand, they're pretty bad at building things.

I pretty much start a mining shaft downward to locate the caverns and hopefully magma early on after getting the initial group underground.  And I do with the caverns what you did; take a quick look and then seal it up for later.

Even without iron ore I end up doing a lot of smelting or other industry requiring magma or charcoal.  I can't imagine trying to keep up with it using trees, or even something like lignite (which I have in the current fort) given the fuel processing that is required as well.  (Besides metal ore I've had thriving porcelain or glass industries going at any given fort so far.)

My starting area was heavily forested IIRC, so that helped me stay magma-less for a while.

But now it's just tedious keeping up with the charcoal requirements... and there's no way I can get enough lignite or bituminous coal.

Aaaand now my beekeeper has gotten into a secretive mood (withdrawn from society).

Grr I say.  At least all they took over was a craftsdwarf workshop.

My beekeeper (lol) crafted the following:

Murkteach the Amazing Rain, a limestone scepter
Value 10800
This is a limestone scepter  All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.  It is encrusted with limestone, decorated with black-cap, and encircled with bands of limestone.  On the item is an image of Mebzuth Hammercontrol the dwarf and dwarves in morion.  Mebzuth Hammercontrol is surrounded by the dwarves.  The artwork relates to the ascension of the dwarf Mebzuth Hammercontrol to the position of the King of the Bridge of Language in 106. [149 years ago, so it's ancient history by now]

Now all I need is an artifact crown, and the ability to give them to my dwarven kingdom as a gift next time they come to trade, and it'd make an excellent and theme-fitting gift-- a fantastic ring, an epic scepter, and a royal crown.

I think I've just been invaded by monkies.

Six Rhesus Macaques just closed in on my marksdwarf pillbox-fort thing at once O.o

Aaand one of my speardwarfs ripped a monkey's leg off and is now BEATING HIM WITH IT.

Another one jammed her wooden spear into a monkey's brain.

I really need to finish making their iron spears some time, but I'm constantly having to burn wood for charcoal until I finish this pump stack...

this right here is the reason i dig down to the magma sea first thing and then set up the fort down there.
takes a bit more setup time, but its SO MUCH easier.

Oooh, my first gobbo siege.

So far, fifteen copper bowmen, one iron crossbowmen.

All of them have bow level 4 (including the crossbowman),  and level 1 of other combat skills.  My dwarves are much better trained than this, though the actual trained and equipped dwarves are fewer in number (five hammerdwarves, five axedwarves, all fully kitted with iron armor and steel weapons).

You'll win, but don't get complacent - after a few years the sieges loose their gentle and forgiving nature.

My newest fort is at war with goblins, elves, humans and (modded in) orcs.  What the hell did they do?  I anticipate lots of sieges.

Also, I just had my fun spoiled by a dragon flying in the front door.
