Ever seen a strange mood activate and go "IM SCREWED"
« on: September 18, 2011, 02:01:22 am »

Yeah. If the image appears, Its my soap maker... He loves electrium, adamantine, and slade, and plump helmets (But will he really make mushroom soap?) He immigrated, I made him a hauler, he was a very social hauler. 2/3 of my fort could start tantrum if he went off. Umm. =D

Lock the door of the craftshop he's claimed if he doesn't start constructing something and get a militia squad stationed outside.

I'm pretty sure that although dorfs will prefer a certain item to build with, they will always settle for an item type.

i.e. Your dwarf will never demand "CANDY OR DIE", but he will like "Ok dude - I'll take any type of metal, but'd be really cool if you could get me some of that cool blue stuff."

Whenever I get a moody glass maker...

Glass isn't one of my strengths in this game.

Also ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS carry silk, plant, and hair thread/cloth. SOOOO many moods will fail because you dont got thread/cloth made from the right type of organic matter.

Any thoughts on how this can be abused?

I learned how to play this game solo many years ago, and ever since then there has been one and only one reason i fail moods; metal. EVERY time i fail a mood, it's because i haven't had enough time to set up a metal industry, or generated enough wealth to purchase it. My dwarves seem to get "metal moods" in waves, i call them mood spirals, and they always strike early (first couple of years).

One time my best marksdwarf had a metal mood, and i thought i was boned then and there. Luckily he only wounded (severely) 5 of the 8 other military personnel in my fort. Despite broken lungs and infected everythings they somehow survived too, so i guess it was a good day.

I love this. In three pages we've gone from being willing to eat intelligent beings, to trying to make them *more* intelligent, so it will be more fun to eat them.

So long as you get any ore mined out, remember that it only takes one log to make a metal bar. Disable every labor on a hauler or otherwise minor importance industry dwarf except for architecture, wood burning, and smelting. Whip up a regular smelter and wood furnace, make a piece of charcoal, and smelt an ore. Happy mood dwarf. :)

Yeah, the problem there though is that i can't find any ore to smelt with. I have my world set to "sparse" minerals, which apparently means roughly 0 in the entire world. Seriously, i'm on fort number 3 and all i've found in that time was zinc. Meanwhile in 40D, i dig down a few z-levels and BAM, more limonite than i know what to do with.

Having said that though, i kinda prefer it this way. No metals means either trading for weapons / weapon materials, or using alternative sources. Most of my military uses the bones of butchered animals as armour, which i imagine as more of a dripping carcass stripped of most of its meat draped over their shoulders. It's a similar case for weapons. To say my dwarves are stark raving mad or insane would be an understatement.

I'll look at it.

So...  strange mood...    he grabbed a cut smoky quartz and a bar of adamantine.   Wonder what I'll get.

....

I got a table.  Oh well, at least I gained an 18 legendary blacksmith out of it.

Yarn is a heinous thing to ask for during an early mood.
Heinous.

I prefer low-mineral world myself as well. There is the definite downside that you'll tend to only get one type of mineral per biome, though the chance to vary between shallow and deep. If you haven't found veins yet, start an exploration shaft to the caverns. Just start digging an up/down stair stack until you hit it, and have someone handy to floor the breach (or wall if you're really unlucky with your aim) making sure they have a way back up afterwards. It's a good way to expose some vein edges if there aren't any to see on the surface. Plus, it also gives you a better idea of how you'll have to dig a path down to the magma sea for your first metal industry buildings--or entire foundry if you don't plan on bringing the magma up.
