I got a theoretical way to curb Elbreth's power: I'll kidnap Mahtan, force him to work 24 hours a day, five days a week until my castle is bedecked with heaps of massive cannons, can house my entire population and walk on giant, steam-powered legs.
Then I shall just up and walk out of my ruined city, and scuttle away every time ELbreth attempts to attack me.
Oh, and my castle-mech shall have some artificial swamps built into it too, to remind us of home. The swamps shall possibly be fueled by MAGIC.

That a crazy enough theory? I might've overdone it on the red cordial.

Why can't he get an army the normal way? Just swear fealty to King Erik and go get your own personal guard (And possibly land too.)

Such Mercantile Empires does not need a feudal army. All they need is enough money to pay their men which are probably city-dwellers.
