hmm... not sure about the history of it but separating  all the useful elements from that black goo isn't too hard, you just heat it at specific temperatures and raise it at each stage the ones which separate at lower heat levels are more flammable and then you start getting onto hexane and oxthane and all of that stuff, think to highest temperature needed is 400-500 celsius to obtain tar.

P.S: all that's from memory so possibly wrong

On another note, I'm in two minds as to whether I should assist the Nahk for money, or help Kytuzian escape for money, either way afterwards I'll probably head east and then north towards the conflict.

Noah...really...you are going to be playing with fire twice over...once by summoning a demon and the second time by attacking Lonemine, and if you sack it...Kain ins't going to be to happy....
I am only going near lonemine in case the demon goes crazy
I won't attack lonemine but the demon might MUHAHAHAHA

Aye, I really doubt a spell-caster would just so happen to be hiding in the cave, I know the ztah tribes usually have one, but there's no mention of him at all. I would have thought he would be somewhere high up on the tribe's social "ladder".
More like on a seperate social ladder.
People respect them but also fear them.

Summon the elementalists indeed... If wizards were that common, the world would be torn in two long ago.

Wizards are rare Noah, you either have to look for them or they come to you. Do these elementalists even obey the magic rules since they are npc's?
The Zacmar don't belive in magic only insanely complicated rituals to summon demons that require Quadruple checks to give a chance of summoning them and three elementalists to do it even remotely safely, then the demon will want something before they even consider listening, then after listening they will ask a price for doing it.
I.e. they aren't wizards they just know how make Element Demons visable without magic.
Element demons are nowhere near as powerful as regular demons.
3 checks for if each person did the work properly then one for if the demon shows up

I missed this when I scanned the posts this morning, so I am just going to say no.  You do not get to pull NPC wizards out of a hat.

In fact, the only person who can pull NPC wizards out of a hat is me, and when that happens you will get plenty of warning because wizards are like nuclear missiles - best used as a deterrent or a weapon of last resort.  Any ruler openly employing a court wizard will let that news get around and even the covert ones you'll hear rumours well in advance.  Right now the only ruler I have on my notes that does openly employ a wizard (wizard-priests) is the hatcuri Emperor, and he's on the other side of the world.

Regarding the whole 'Alchemy' question.

"Alchemy" is a wide field, and like true alchemy was a wonder hybrid of various natural sciences plus philosophy.  "Chemistry" as a science is directly adapted from the original name alchemy (which was adapted from the Arabic word).  Alchemists could (and did) study physics, the properties of matter, metallurgy, the properties of herbs, all three or only select parts of each.  Isaac Newton (the last great alchemist) was very noted for his work in both physics and chemistry.  The division of the sciences was a cultural distinction, not one inherent to science itself - organic chemistry and biology for example overlap so much that there is an entire division of science (the aptly named biochemistry) devoted to it.

The definition I work by (and the one I use doing my rolls) is that Mahtan is an engineer/alchemist (with a focus on chemistry) and Drua is a physician/carographer/alchemist (with a focus on but not exclusive to herbalism).  Contrast with Dr Johnston, a physician/surgeon/herbalist who is not an alchemist, but is much better suited to dealing with medicine and surgery.

Weasel's miscellaneous points: Rock oil exists and is mostly used for lamps.

Boy is it right time for me to ditch Miring. Can't wait for spring to leg it from the place.

You can technically ditch it before Spring happens, I just gave you the option to wait.

Edit:  Trubaldsome, I really wish you could make catapults, but Terenos left all Miring's engineers in Preston.

Hold up a minute.  Didn't Miring have catapults?  Let me check my notes. No, no they did not.  I was thinking of Preston.  Oh, if only their catapults had headed south instead of north!

Edit 2:  Micelus, I saw your post, but you and everyone else looking to join up with Drua need Little to okay your accompanying her on the voyage first.

Well, shit. You might want to add the engineer requirement to the Rules page on the wiki.

If we manage to get extra ducats from Trubaldsome's plan, just upgrade everyone we can with Disciplined or Archer.

Wait, Doesn't Miring's troops have to leave the castle to loot the port?

They still control the port, and they can send out partial raiders without a full troop.  They can loot the port for the same reason you can't loot it - suppressing fire from the castle.  This is a rule I'll stick by when Elbreth eventually comes under siege in a similar situation.

Edit:  Edited the Wiki to account for the specialist clarification.  Note that this may be unbalanced - previously you could not build any siege unit without an engineer.  Now you can build siege towers without one.  I might rebalance siege towers to fit.

I think that there wasn't much travel done during winter, and with my injuries it would be stupid to get my ass frozen off.
I also think that any assault on the castle should also wait until spring. Winter is an awful season to conduct anything.

I don't need to grow plants, I just need to know how to make poisons and greek fire. And petroleum base doesn't have to be petroleum. Basically I need to learn alchemy, not herbalism, I also know that Mahtan doesn't know how to make greek fire, which is why I will steal it from the nations that do.

That last gobbo would stand there, missing an arm, punctured in a kidney, liver, and spleen, fading in and out of consciousness at the far end of where the drawbridge would go, and his last sight would be the drawbridge dropping down and smashing him like a bug.

God DAMN I love this game!

Ah yes I suppose, just upgrade the ships then. I don't want to delay this update or anything! :P
Just make the pikemen disciplined, give a regiment (my guard I suppose, since we don't have any others who aren't peasants) the tactical advantage, and yeah, just generally do what Hellhound said. :)

Seems like the best thing you can do in this situation. That tactical upgrade is key though. Make sure you protect that unit!

Well, I have to go to sleep now, and am no doubt gonna miss the update, so the basic tactics are:
As before, my archers(in locations to maximise their tactical effect on the surrounding troops) pepper the enemy with bolts as they approach, pikemen fend them off as the get near, and have peasants set fire to any siege ladders or other means of scaling the walls, dousing them (and the enemies climbing them) with flammable liquid. If/when soldiers do start climbing the walls somehow, other peasants are to start dropping furniture and large objects on their heads to knock 'em off. If anyone gets on the walls, the peasants will use their improvised weaponry to join in the defence.
As for the naval aspect, Trubaldsome will leave all that up to Aulon/Waery. He's heartily scared of boats! :P

Well, it's the thought that counts, I guess!
Anyway, I'm gonna leave it at that for tonight, before I end up writing another of those ridiculously long posts waffling on about nothing much at all. ::)
