If the Tea Party fucks this up, though, I think we're going to get a stabilization of the Republican party--which could be good for everyone.

Yeah.  I really strongly agree with some of the Republican baseline ideals, frankly, but I think the social extremists are really fucking up the ball.  I'd like to see more bipartisanship that was actually bipartisan, rather than both Republican and Democrat moderates being dragged around by a subset trying to buy everyone rail tickets to crazytown.

More seriously, I just echo Vector. Today, the extremists seem to me to be more obviously in the Republican Party, but even after the last several years I still seem to think that that's a coincidence instead of something that genuinely represents the philosophy of that party.

Frankly, I'd be just as pissed if the really hardline second-wave feminists (the ones who think that all sex with men is rape and that dudes should all be castrated) formed some sort of party-thing and led the Democrats around.

Actually, probably more pissed.

But I'm really praying that the Tea Party thing dies out soon and we can try for something saner.

Serious question, what are the moderate republican baseline ideals? Its been so long since they managed to get heard over the lunatics screaming into a megaphone that I just don't know anymore.

When Boener and such others are "moderate", look, you have a problem.

People complain about voting between the choices of a douche and turd sandwich and decided to stay mostly uninvolved, but thanks to the old, rich bored people - this country's politics have been hijacked by nearly lunatic fringe.

I'm not completely sure, but I think it has something to do with minimalizing bureaucracy and protecting farmers' interests.

Theoretically, republicans should be working for the agricultural little guy rather than sleeping with big business.  You know... making sure that the rural US doesn't get utterly fucked and so on.  Reasonable national defense.  Old-fashioned ideals of personal responsibility and unity, which we absolutely need so long as they don't overwhelm us, just like we need the Democratic ideals of a protective state and infinite diversity.

I think that ideally, Democrats and Republicans should work together as a well-balanced, well-oiled clock, ticking gently from side to side as the needs of the country changes.  Both necessary.  Both fighting for different interests, and coming out with something good.

However, I don't think things are working like that right now.
