Come now, even if our state-of-the-art FTL drive exploded, I'm sure the GM could come up with some technobabble about parallel universes, time travel, or somesuch to keep us from doing it.
I've always wanted to host a game in a futuristic setting, and once, when the players send out a probe, randomly give them some rediculous amount of XP.  When they ask why, "Time Travel Shenanigans"

Anyway, there is a certain sci-fi cliché for manhandling FTL drives---You just need to knock the jump distance to zero, or +infinite, or -1, if that's how it works here.
