My mother is into operas - try something by Giuseppe Verdi, if you're looking to get into opera. Also look up Charles Gounod's Faust, that's great as well.

Chant and choirs? Look up Gregorian Masters of Chant. They do covers of all kinds of songs in the style of the Gregorian chant.

The Shins released a new album earlier this month by the name of Heartworms. While I personally prefer Chutes so Narrow and Oh, Inverted World I still reckon this one has some decent songs. My favourites so far have been:

Rubber Ballz

I've also been enjoying Dear and the Headlight's I'm Not Crying. You're Not Crying, Are You? and Elliot Smith's (well Elliot Smith's everything but particularly) Angeles.

Oh man, I've only listened to Port of Morrow, but that album inflicted a near-terminal amount of feels upon me when it came out.
Maybe I should give their other stuff a listen sometime.

The Shins are pretty great, I reckon. James Mercer has a talent for writing sorta bittersweet songs, I like Pink Bullets quite a bit personally.

Not what had in mind at all. It doesn't sound like "Oh shit the Nazis!" It's just some anthem, and not a particularly good one either like the Russians. I'm thinking something more along the lines of Propaganda or the fan-made orchestral Arstotzkan theme.

Commie theme is soviet anthem, period.
Also, I believe anything by Red Army Choir will make you want to seize the means of production.
Ideally, you want to find soviet anthem performed by aforementioned choir.

There, take your pick. Some if the commiest sounding music ever, right there. Personal highlight - Red Army is the strongest, 23:39.
