Economics
« on: March 28, 2011, 08:32:25 pm »

Because I could not follow either of the discussions in the "Issues" thread, and because this seems like a particularly ripe topic that I have almost nothing to say about.

But I would like to read about it!

As I've said, I'm woefully uneducated in economics, but the previous topic of discussion was socialism and communism and how they relate. In my ignorance, I've been lead to believe that socialism is a system whereby the weakest members of society are raised up whereas communism is a system in which the force that drives the economy is put in command. I suppose they do share equality as a similar goal, but beyond that I don't see how they relate.

So please, explain to me why I am wrong, because I almost definitely am.

Economics largely falls under two schools of thought, (for a gross oversimplification) those following Freidman and those following Kynes, and their respective theories.

Okay.

So.

Socialism is economic system when the government controls the corporations and resources and what not and everyone shares in.

Communism is a government system when the government controls the corporations and resources and what not and everyone shares in.

As you can see there are some vast differences, but the basics are the same.

Capitalism is that one we are meant to like, right? You know, the one were wealth has a tendency to accumulate more wealth, draining it in a vampire like fashion from the poor?

I'm some what well off right now, so I could go for that!

Communism is a government system when the government controls the corporations and resources and what not and everyone shares in.
Okay, so now I'm not seeing how those are different. Other than that one is called an economic system and the other not.

Aww, but I really wanted a system, where I can afford to use paintings of the 1600's as toilet paper, while others don't have enough medical care to afford a toothbrush.

It depends on the definition of 'welfare' capitalism. Personally, I'm a libertarian, so let em compete! Realistically a purely deregulated economy will fail due to the ammorality of human beings, so I support a mostly deregulated economy with just enough regulation to prevent economic blackmail and to support entrepreneurs and the lower classes (via assistance getting educated, not welfare).

It depends on the definition of 'welfare' capitalism.

Welfare capitalism: Examples: The U.S. Canada. British place island.
