So I have two horses from embarking. I stuck them in a pasture so they wouldn't starve while I got, well, everything set up. Just now I looked outside to designate them for slaughtering, and I saw tons of rats in the pasture. I couldn't grab a screenie on this computer, but they were definitely congegrating around my horses.

Has anyone seen this before? Something I should be worried about?

Should've brought a cat. They go to town on rat hordes.

I'm not sure if they do anything outside of normal vermin activities of nibbling food.

Shouldn't be a problem. I forgot to bring a cat on embark and there were rats all over the place. Didn't seem to have any effect other than grossing out the dwarves.

I admit that it is disturbing to see a dozen rats gathering there, as though with ill intentions...

I did get a cat later, just to keep the place tidy.

The remains end up in the refuse pile. Unlike live vermin, who go all over the place.

You could also have a trapper catch them.

Not around my horse. Though I did have a field of horses. It just seemed to be a random part of the map, a good 10x10 square filled with multiple rats all over the place, it was honestly too much for my four cats to handle. They just kept coming and I decided I'd better ignore it, and they all disappeared afterwards (groups of 10 or so were later discovered in various food stockpiles).

I had that happen once, huge horde of rats right next to my wagon on embark. Nearly all of my food spoiled before summer. Now I always bring cats.

You could also have a trapper catch them.
