Does the turtle have a socket?

The tiny turtle you looked at before had one, but you havn't examined this one closely.
Almost all animals have cube slots, and the ones that don't aren't very useful in battle at all, even without upgrades. This turtle was pretty badass, so it probably has more than one.

Wallace exits the lab, intent on healing his turtle.
The small clinic on the western side of town takes a few minutes to reach, but when he gets there they heal the turtle quickly.
You are inside the clinic.

Nirur: "So, the Professor's your uncle?"
Ken: "Yeah, I guess it gives me a bit of an advantage to adventuring, at least starting out."
Nat: "You have any idea what the Prof wants to give us?"
Ken: "I would probably say that he's giving us our ADVEN- Uh, our adventurer's books. Sorry, the voice thing runs in my family."

The Prof comes back out, carrying six small books.
Prof C: "OKAY, I've got them, now everybody take ONE, and I'll explain what they are. Wait, where's the other guy? The one with the TURTLE?"
Kaguro: "He went down to the clinic. We'll give him his when we meet him."
Prof C: "Well, ANYWAYS, these are ADVERTURER'S BOOKS. Every major town usually has a OBJECTICON FIGHT CLUB, or an equivalent place. The LEADERS of the clubs are called BOSSES. Really creative group, they are. A BOSS has a BOSS PIN, which they give out to anybody which DEFEATS THEM in OBJECTICON BATTLE, or whatever. I'm a SCIENTIST, not an adventurer, I have no idea what happens in THOSE places. You put the PIN in the BOOK, then when you fill the book with a certain number of pins you can compete in various TOURAMENTS and CONTESTS of many SORTS."

The four of you, as well as Ken, each take a book. Nat takes two, one for herself and one for Wallace.

Prof C: "Well, that's pretty much it. Ken, that rodent is for YOU, I want you to go out the and be BETTER than EVERYONE. I expect no less from my NEPHEW.
He leads you to the door, and the booting out is much lighter this time. It seems he's less of an asshole that previously thought.

Ken: "Well, see you guys, I have to go see my parents and stuff.

I go and wait at the gate and read the book while I wait for the others

I return home to tell my drunken, widowed mother that I'm leaving again, and I'll try to swipe a bottle of something. One never knows when a bottle of something will come in handy. I'll then stick with the group.

Get my book off the professor

Furtuka thinks about heading out to wait at the edge of town, but he doesn't know which gate to wait at, the western, norther, or eastern. Instead, he takes a closer look at his book. The inside cover is red leather, with little pockets to place boss pins. The actual pages are mostly technical information and lists of which animals live in which area, plus a lot of info on the places with Boss' to fight. There's a small atlas near the back, but it doesn't have much information.

Nat looks around for a fight club, but doesn't find any. She does spot Wallace, and catches up with him to give him his book.

Kaguro heads home, to wish his parent farewell.
As he walks in the door, his mother smothers him with a hug.
Mom: "Oh-my-little-baby-you-can't-leave-you're-too-young! Oh-what-happened-to-your-pants-it's-dangerous-out-there-you'll-get-hurt!"
He struggles for air, telling her that everything's going to be fine, nothing will happen to him, almost everybody adventures, etcetera.
Mom: "Oh you're so much like your father!" She glides over to a gigantic framed photo of a ...man? He's so androgynous, it's hard to tell.
Mom: "If you really must go, take this. If you ever meet your father, tell him I'm still waiting for him to come home." She hands Kaguro a suitcase, and he leaves after his own parting words.

Nirur returnes home, and faces his mother.
Mother: "Off ta adventure, are ya? Gonna leave me like yer daddy?" She doesn't sound especially drunk, but the smell of liquor permeading everything disagrees.
Nirur: "I'll be back soon, mother. You worry too much."
Mother: "Yeah, tha's whatcha say, inn'it? Go on, don't need ya here."
She doesn't seem to be in a very talkative mood, so Nirur just grabs a bottle from the fridge and leaves.
