why are we evening bothering? and wouldn't they have to clear it with the UK too? They are still considered a Commonwealth of the crown.

Suppose the US and Canada (and their respective peoples) decide to form one big happy family.  The UK says nay.  The newly formed United Canada of States (or whatever) says something along the lines of "make me".  The UK sulks.  End of story.  :P

You do realize that if the very words "Merged with the US" came out of Harpers mouth the riots would start immediately?

Actually, I'd bet everyone in both countries would say a collective "eh," and would precede to not care so much about it.

If the Canadians want to join the USA, I see no reason to refuse. They don't, so it won't happen. I'd love to see a US-Canada superstate mostly because then the US would suddenly be a lot better. I can only imagine how badass the Congress members from Canada would be. America's hat would turn into America's brain. It's the next best thing to the US joining Canada, which is also never happening either. Such is life. At least I hope more American-border citizens get political ideals closer to their Canadian friends next door.

I also see nothing nefarious about wanting a single NA currency, but then again I don't see much of a benefit either. The differing languages (all two of them, three if you count French) and non-metric US are far bigger obstacles than having to switch between pesos, USD, and Canadian dollars. It seems many business near the borders accept both currencies anyways, and it's not difficult to exchange between the two. We should probably work on metrification in the US first before even considering a merger.

And in any case, really? A joint council about trade affairs from the US and Canada is a merger? I hope the OP is kidding since this is huge joke.

I was hoping for some Onion-y goodness.  I am disappoint.

[sigh] Why is it that, even though I approached a serious subject with a serious attitude, readers are disappointed that it doesn't end with a joke?  ::)

I can understand the skepticism and criticism. After all, it is a ridiculously outrageous article title. (I'm sure it was designed to grab attention.) And, to be fair, the article approached it with an obviously very biased (e.g., conspiracy) slant. But it also seems clear that none of you took it seriously enough to actually click on the relevant links and read.

Fine. Since readers can't be bothered, here's a summary of what's it's really about:

Joint Statement by President Obama and Prime Minister Harper of Canada on Regulatory Cooperation
Quote
Today, President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Stephen Harper have directed the creation of a United States-Canada Regulatory Cooperation Council (RCC), composed of senior regulatory, trade, and foreign affairs officials from both governments. In recognition of our $1 trillion annual trade and investment relationship, the RCC has a two-year mandate to work together to promote economic growth, job creation, and benefits to our consumers and businesses through increased regulatory transparency and coordination.

They have directed that the first meeting of the RCC be convened within 90 days by the relevant agencies in the United States and Canada.

That's quoted directly off the whitehouse.gov website.

Basically, it's about an agreement which laid the foundation for an "RCC" council, whose purpose is (supposedly) to promote economic growth and benefits to businesses "through increased regulatory transparency and coordination." It's about increased cooperation and some (myself included) worry that this could be the first step toward a dissolving of regulatory and government boundaries.

Can't you see how this trend looks?
NAFTA... RCC... American Currency Union... Globalization... North American Union... One World Government...

If one bothers to do more research and dig into things deeper, it looks a lot scarier than the "onion-y" conspiracy-like surface might imply.

Also, it seems nobody wanted to talk about how over 99.99% of the world belongs to the U.N.. Nor on the alarming membership of the U.N. Human Rights council.

The President doesn't have that authority anyway.

The fact that the President doesn't have that kind of authority hasn't stopped the Presidency from reaching beyond it. There are a number of very frightening Executive Orders and other measures that the office has already enacted that goes way beyond what the Constitution or the Bill of Rights allows, beyond even the Separation of Powers. Congress, too, has acted beyond it's authority, even recently. But then, these types of things get brushed off and ignored very easily. And they never get the kind of media attention they deserve.

People don't want to believe how corrupt things haven gotten, myself included. But burying one's head in the sand isn't going to solve anything.

This common reaction to "conspiracy" talk (a brushoff and complete disbelief because it's too absurd or "wacky") reminds me of that starship in the The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series of novels that's hidden in plain view of a bustling park. It resembled an upside-down gondola painted absurd colors (it had polka-dots, if I recall correctly) and because it was so outrageous, nobody believed it could exist. And so it was invisible to anyone who did not expect it and consciously look for it.

Another words, the situation may be so dire or outrageous that very few folks bother to look at it closely to see if there's actually something to it.

I am, quebecer would not be happy to be merged with the US ( frankly, you (americans) really are hated around here (especially republicans) and thus sovereignty would be almost a given. You can keep the Rockies, i don't care about ski anyway.

Finally, someone to free us from Witch-King Harper

I've always thought that Canada and the 'States were similar enough to warrant a union of the two.  If nationalism ("Canada sucks!" "The US sucks!") wasn't so prominent, there wouldn't be a problem.

But it sounds more like a "Let's be better friends" than "Let's get married and transfer both of our minds into our first child".  Too bad.

Many of you are talking about how a U.S.-Canada combined nation and currency wouldn't be so bad. But the trend I see is a U.S.-Canada-MEXICO combined currency, eventually followed with a North American Union combined nation. That would have some rather serious repercussions.

Anyway, I doubt either Canadians, or Mexicans would want to be so closely associated with the United States. For one thing, the U.S. has a very poor reputation worldwide right now. And if it appeared like the U.S. absorbed Canada and Mexico, that would only reinforce concerns some have (particularly in the Middle East) that the U.S. is attempting to become the next British Empire and go about conquering other nations.

We do not need a worse political image right now. If it were to get much worse, I fear how otherwise neutral or allied Middle Eastern nations might react.

ZOMG One World Government!  They want to control everything, right?  Who are they?  Do they have absolute power over their presumed fiefdoms currently?  Why would they trade absolute power over X for shared power (thus conflict) over X+Y?  If the malevolent They has such control over X and wants to extend it to Y, why not govern X and Y separately from the shadows?  Isn't that what We have come to expect from nonspecific malign entities?  Surely They wouldn't let Us down, would They?

... Haven't you already answered your own issue, then?  No one wants this, and it would be bad for everyone concerned, so there's no reason to do it.  No reason to do it right now -> probably not happening in our lifetimes.

Especially not with the USSR in such recent memory.
