I just don't trust a US one. Hell, had it not been for the US War of Independence we would probably already have a one world government lead by the British.

Larger empires have crumbled over smaller things, doodabuddy.

For example, what in the heck were the Brits going to do in that era when it came to conquering Russia?

This troubles me. The USA is the last group you want running a One World Government. Just how long do you think we have until belonging to this One World Government is mandatory and enforced by the US? Oh, and Canada will not become the USA's brain. No US citizen would allow it. Do you know how much Canadians and Americans despise eachother? Hell, Canada might even have a bloody civil war over this.

Hehehe.

Have you heard the term friendly rivalry? That's about as far as the animosity goes. As for the no US citizen would ever allow it comment really makes me think that you are way out of touch with how it really is here. Are you really Australian? Your point of view sounds more Chinese to me, no offense intended.

Ask Dink if I'm Australian. He will confirm it. And how is my point of view Chinese?

Many of you are talking about how a U.S.-Canada combined nation and currency wouldn't be so bad. But the trend I see is a U.S.-Canada-MEXICO combined currency, eventually followed with a North American Union combined nation. That would have some rather serious repercussions.

You're argument in a nutshell:
"1. Instigate common currency.
2. ? ? ? Something happens.
3.The three states become one."

I don't think I need to point out how much needs to be done in step two to achieve the third, no to mention how much of a logical tie in you need to include 1 in there somehow.
Other than that, I don't think you comprehend just how much legal affairs must be done for two states to merge with each other to form some sort of collective state. If you crack open a legal oriented book on state affairs and books that deal with the workings of states and how they function, you'd know that this process cannot remain unpublicized. Further, I don't know where you got the idea that Obama and Harper can make these sorts of decisions. Yes they may have gone against the wishes of some voters, but to conclude from this that they're dictators because they have to deal with the other part of the population that wants something different than what you want is simply childish.

Quote
Anyway, I doubt either Canadians, or Mexicans would want to be so closely associated with the United States. For one thing, the U.S. has a very poor reputation worldwide right now. And if it appeared like the U.S. absorbed Canada and Mexico, that would only reinforce concerns some have (particularly in the Middle East) that the U.S. is attempting to become the next British Empire and go about conquering other nations.

That's a pretty silly argument. If all the states were to be combined, the main worries aren't going to be what sort of things will be passed down from the old states that don't exist anymore, in all respects, most of those things like reputation will dissolve a bit. What the joining states will most worry about is how representation and whether the advantages of laying down their autonomy outweighs the loss of self determination. There's also a huge worry about how different legal systems and the overall functionality of the two state's apparati can be reconciled.

Yep, we're too laid back. Except I believe the Irish should lead it. When it is finally complete you could expect the mother of all parties, no matter the naton in charge, but I think the most alcohol would be provided by Ireland. (I am under 16, but expect to be at least 18 when this happens. You know, so I can drink beer)

I don't think you will ever get muted as long as you are contributing to the discussion and don't resort to personal attacks. I don't have anything against the Chinese at all. It just seems to me if I was a power in a region I'd tell everyone (Australians included) that the other power over there isn't as nice as it seems, and I'd do it on a more personal level such as through free internet games and target people in countries and areas just now receiving internet access.

Do you know how much Canadians and Americans despise eachother? Hell, Canada might even have a bloody civil war over this.

I said, "want", not "expect to happen". Here's the checklist for a merger to happen.

One, it has to be peaceful. I don't think either side would even consider force, but hell, the American military is pretty notorious for bad ideas. Violent takeover=lots of protests, the UN bitching, and major problems with the rest of the world.
Two, the leaders who try this have to be really well liked by both sides. Since American presidents aren't generally liked by the rest of the world (or by Americans, nyuck nyuck nyuck), that's the first major hurdle. Americans don't generally like any foreign leader from any nation, so good luck with that.
Three, both sides would have to shift a bit more in political leaning until they're closer to each other. Basically, the US needs to be more liberal and/or Canada needs to be more conservative. Ideally their leaders would also coincide on polical stances. This probably means a conservative for Canada and liberal for the US. Us Americans sure are conservative.
Four, the two countries would need to have more in common. One currency, one language, ect. There's already a lot to go off here, but one currency is a must. Beyond that the US needs to go metric and provide social services in a similar manner to Canada (or Canada needs to cut social services, but I somehow doubt that'll ever happen).
Five, the idea needs to be floated and given a lot of time to digest. Probably at least a generation for both sides to accept. Canada wouldn't be too bad, but Alaska and the US South would bitch and moan til the end of time, but I think they'll be won over with the right campaign. Places close to Canada will probably be cool with the whole deal.
Six, there would have to be some force driving the two countries together. No, special interests groups and big business are not enough. Terrorism is good but limited to military and transportation cooperation. Revolt might work, but I don't see that happening in the near future in either country. If China or Russia was more militaristic I could see the rivalry being the catalyst. Alien attack would certainly suffice, but those damned aliens never arrive on schedule.

Anything I'm missing? Probably, I'm no expert.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

(or by Americans, nyuck nyuck nyuck)

ORLY?

Disclaimer:  No clue how reliable their data is i.e. which polls they use.  It's the first result I clicked after a Google search for "us presidential approval over time".  :P

Warning:  They would have you believe that Truman and Nixon were each, at some point, less popular than Dubya.  Again, I have no idea how reliable their data is.  Is this true?

Also, dayum!  Eisenhower is king.
