Whats the new Shallow Metal, and Deep Metal mean?
I can't find those terms anywhere in the raws, although another person mentioned them in the Dwarf mode forum.  Where did you find them?

It's the new embark descriptors for the stone layers as opposed to what they actually are

It appears you can no longer see where you're embarking, so those people who like to embark on dolomite, like me, are screwed over because now you have no idea where you are!

My guess would be that it has something to do with cavern layers, although someone in the Dwarf Mode forum said:

Me too. Finding any metal or stone that you want is too hard. Sed. layers are impossable to find; aqufiers are everywhere; and Shallow metals and deep metals mean almost nothing.
The bees and eggs are great but the new geology is unrealistic and too hard. Candy is the only reliable metal I have so far.

So possibly it's bugged at the moment.

after tweaking the volcanism values a bit, i think i'm confident to say, shallow metal means there are sedimentary and/or metaphorphic stone layers. and deep metal means, accrodingly, igneous stone layers.

Without a creature to make them? (or a old style vermin reaction to make the egg? Edit: Maybe a vermin caste inside a normal creature?) I'm not sure how. What they hatch seems to be implicitly determined by what spawned them. I'm sure a egg-like container could be made, then stuffed with some explosive or something. Unless a new token if found or a old one with a new use?

In theory, you should be able to take any bit of an animal, and create an egg out of it using GET_MATERIAL_FROM_REGENT.  So, grab cave dragon bones, and hatch a baby cave dragon.

Even if the data (structures/classes) worked that way (which I just don't know if they do), you need a live creature of that type to start with. In which case you already have one! ^.^ Even if it did copy the data structure, it should also copy the 'tame' status. :P
