Missing Metals
« on: February 16, 2011, 05:47:02 pm »

I've just downloaded the latest verson of DF (.19) and genned multiple words. But each one seems devoid of any metal. Each stone layer is mainly uniform marble or basalt or whatever.
Has anyone else encountered this or should I download the game again?
Thanks in advance.

Marble being a metamorphic stone, you really shouldn't expect to find too much metal in it.

Try embarking in an area with a sedimentary layer. If you're new, sedimentary layers show up in white text on the right side of the embark screen that shows biome information(If you're not new, then this entire post was pointless).

I've played .16 and .18 so I'm not that new to the game but it seems that every enbark i try veins of metal ore are absent.
I'll gen a few more and see if it was just a few bad worlds.

The new update is supposed to reduce the frequency of veins and clusters. I haven't tried it yet. Also apparently you can no longer see if you have a sedementary layer or not. In fact you can only see the first layer of soil. (That's what I'm reading anyway) Also Marble contains veins of malachite which is an ore of copper.

I have just found a marble layer with the copper ore. But i'm finding more gems than metal. I've tried 5+ embarks and I havent even seen any gold, silver or iron ores.

I must have missed the bit about vein frequency being reduced(I haven't updated DF yet either).

But yeah, I doubt your maps are bugged if other people are finding ore. Probably just a string of bad luck.

Such is the nature of the stone http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Metamorphic

Regenned and keep finding only a few veins of sphalerite etc. It seems that there is one main metal that is loosely scattered in veins around the map. Still havent found any iron.

I'm disliking this new 'feature'... It's almost impossible to get a decent fort going...

Me too. Finding any metal or stone that you want is too hard. Sed. layers are impossable to find; aqufiers are everywhere; and Shallow metals and deep metals mean almost nothing.
The bees and eggs are great but the new geology is unrealistic and too hard. Candy is the only reliable metal I have so far.

Actually, the geology is somewhat more realistic than before. Although it stills sucks. Rule of fun and all that.

Maybe. But it sucks when you only get a few veins of copper ore and enough flux to shake a stick at. In .18, my biggest problem was getting marble in my embark locations so i could make steel. Now I'm just looking for iron.

If we are going for realism, I suspect fewer but larger veins are in order. Might not be bad for gameplay either. But I'm no geologist.

I'd love to see a embark site with a singe vein of hematite 50 tiled wide and maybe a hundred long.

At least the crowd that advocated for scarcer metals is happy. When people were complaining that metal was too abundant, few spoke in support.
