You're all still visible, it just has to make a roll to find you when you're covered.

It also might be attracted to the entire area where the mites exploded, that goop is still on the mites and on the plants.

Anyone want to hazard a guess as to what 'it' is?

No, everything on world is a speed evolved form of something from earth. Terraforming was done by crafting the environment and then exposing the life to a virus that allowed them to mix'n'match DNA at an incredible rate, letting them evolve to an environment as if they'd lived in it for millenia. So everything has a real world analogue, even if it hardly resembles it anymore.
