When you wake up, find out what happened. Campus being leveled is probably not an everyday event.

You wake up in an uncomfortable bed. The room is dark, but there is light on the other side of the door, as well as on the opposite side of the curtains. You look around the little hole in the wall you reside in and notice that your arms and legs are all immobilized. Wha? You feel around with your fingers and touch a button-covered panel by your right hand. You press the top button and your bed jerks up about two inches. The pain is manageable, so you press the one below it. You bed jerks down two inches, back to its original position. You press the next one, but it just makes a buzzing sound. You wait a moment, and a nurse walks in and opens your curtains.

She gives you a big smile. "Do you need anything, sir?" she asks.
Finding your voice, you say "Uh, why are my arms and legs like this?"
"Let me look at your chart," she picks up a clipboard from the foot of your bed. "Well, it seems that your arms received multiple contusions, as well as lacerations and hair line fractures. Your legs show signs of severe trauma to the muscles."
"In English please, nurse," you say.
"Oh," she looks a bit embarrassed. "You have a lot of cuts and bruises, and your arms have small breaks in the bone. Your leg muscles are badly hurt from overuse. If you don't mind me asking, how often do you go running? Damage like this is extremely unusual."
"I don't go running that often, but I did do some sort of super-sprint to escape my falling dorm."
"Ah," she looks thoughtful. "That would make sense." She marks something down on your chart. "Well, anyway, I have to attend to another patient. If you have anything you need, don't hesitate to press the call button again."

You look out the window and see a frightful scene. You see tall office buildings standing next to the mountainous remains of their former neighbors, apartments leveled, and the houses in the distance leaning precariously on one another. You remember seeing the hospital on the hill before, separate from the city and having no other buildings around it. You wonder briefly how poorly built the university buildings would have had to be to just liquefy after an earthquake.

IT WAS JETHRO. FIND HIM!
That couldn't have been an earthquake. Meditate and look for something unusual beneath the town. Or anywhere, really.

You do your best to focus your mind and meditate, even though you are stuck in an extremely uncomfortable position.
You scan the area around you, but the only auras you see are normal, healthy ones and auras that gave the impression of death. They are blackened and sickly, showing little life within. It's probably a bad idea to be exposed to these auras, because you can see that other auras near them blacken just slightly from the proximity. Turning your attention away from your immediate surroundings, you look down, past the lower floors, past the hospital, past the buzz of life in the soil. You keep focusing as much as you can, and you get the feeling that your mind has entered a large open space. You search around a little, but there is nothing here. You draw yourself back into your body, (roll of 9) but something catches your attention. It's a living thing, definitely, but it's unlike anything you've ever seen. It pulses with mental energy, and from the size of it, it could have easily leveled the entire city. You feel suddenly that it is looking in your direction. (roll of 14) It doesn't notice you, but it pulses with more energy, as if it suspects something. You pull back as fast as you can and jump back into your body.

You jerk awake in your hospital bed again. That was certainly interesting. You test out the buttons on the panel you haven't pressed, and one of them eventually turns the TV across the room on. You fiddle with it some more, and get to a news channel. For some godawful reason this channel is in Spanish, but from the images you can extrapolate that the scientists' best guess is that a massive earthquake, made land, and poor construction standards all combined to destroy half the city. You know this to be complete bull, but no one would believe you if you told them what really happened.

Would you guys like me to fast-forward through our stay in the hospital? I could write out the updates until we're healed, but that might cause a bit of story stagnation, which is what really caused the "earthquake."

While it would be amusing for Fugue to learn Spanish entirely from watching the television which is clearly entirely in Spanish, I vote for a skip to the end of the hospital stay. Besides, I'd be a hypocrite not to since I did a time skip in at least every single one of my games.

You meant that Jethro?
Jethroe
I was confused by the spelling. :o

You lie back and focus on healing.
A few weeks later, you are discharged and sent on your way. You take stock of yourself.
You have:
Lockpicks
1 wallet
$5

You hitch a ride to town with a family and make a good impression with them. They say that if you ever need a ride, all you have to do is call them. You write their number down on some paper and shove it in your pocket. You are now at the front doors of the Carson Investing Firm. You walk in and make your way to the reception desk.
The receptionist takes one look at you and says, "Oh, John, we thought you had died. The boss wants to see you, then. Just through the door behind me and up the spiral steps. You'll know it when you see the luxury you will never be able to afford."
You half close your eyes and smile. You despise Ms. Hoyt and her class war mentality. You stride through the door and up the stairs. You look for the office of your boss, the kind but efficient Mr. Baker. He will most likely pardon your absence, so long as you don't mention alcohol. He might even give you some money if you mention the destruction of the university and your hospital stay.

You walk into the office of your employer, who is listening to his mp3 player. He removes his headphones and focuses on you.
"John! Hey buddy, how's it going? Wheresoever have you been? It's good to see that you're still alive after the 'quake. Want a drink or something?"

Conversation Initiated!

I'll let you guys handle this one. Try to convince him that we are in need of some help. Most notably, we need a new home and some guarantee that our hospital bills won't crush us.

So our name is John? I believe this is the only person to recognize us other than the convenience store guy. Anyway: Explain to him the whole situation about your hospitalization, and ask for help. Afterward, try to subtly get some info about yourself out of him.

Anyway, I was planning on having you guys suggest what, specifically, John should say in order to convince the boss to not lay us off.
