A fire trap sounds cool, but I think that the way you described it, it would have a very small area of effect, whereas the railgun would be able to hit anything you can aim it at.

It's in a hall, and you choose when it activates. They're required to run through it if they want to get into the dome at all.

You said it's on the ceiling so, hallway or not, it still only hits a 5 by 5 foot area at most.

EDIT: On the subject of critical fail, should the flame trap crit fail, then at best, it wouldn't work, and at worst, it would explode, showering the area, and you in flaming oil
