Maybe The Great Leader has finally decided to face that fact then?
There was some talk about the North getting antsy because the South were doing training stuff on that island but how that led them to firing on it I have no idea.

Well, the world longest cease fire, has just been broken then.

They've been killing each other much more quietly for decades. This is just far more brazen than usual.

If this thing "properly" escalates it will make Fallujah look like a rowdy 60's campus riot. I'm hoping it doesn't for Seoul's sake.

Sounds like North Korea fired about 200 shots, and South Korea shot 80 back.  Nothing seems to have happened since then except the usual condemnations from the nations you'd expect.  My guess is that if anything was going to happen, it would have happened right after the attack.  North Korea probably doesn't want a war with South Korea at the moment because South Korea + allies would probably kick their asses, and South Korea doesn't want a war with North Korea because North Korea has tons of artillery aimed at Seoul.  Of course you never really know with North Korea...

According to the link I posted some academic type reckons this is intended to strengthen negotiations of some kind.
I think Kim Jong-iil plays DF.

I think the Kims don't need DF, as they can play it IRL.

No one likes us
I don't know why.
We may not be perfect,
But heaven knows we try.
But all around
even our old friends put us down
Let's drop the big one
And see what happens.

We give them money,
But are they grateful?
No, they're spiteful, and they're hateful.
They don't respect us, so let's surprise them
We'll drop the big one and pulverize them.

...Are you suggesting that Kim should toss himself into magma?

Since you know, he is a noble.

Posting to watch. Its a lot more 'out in the open' then previous attacks by NK, I have to admit.

Could be related to war games held by SK and US at that island. NK sent an angry note and then shelled the island as a warning or show of force and determination.

Assuming that's their real twitter account, this could be bad.
:edit: looks legit, could just be more saber rattling though.

Also, Best Korea claims that the south fired first, but that's predictable.

Well, that isn't a lie per se. SK was doing, firing exercise on the island.

If that what they mean, then they are /really/ stretching the colloquial meaning of that phrase.

The US should have invaded NK when we were all into the whole randomly invading other countries craze after 9/11.

I mean seriously, we invaded a country that we had no proof whatsoever was any threat to the US or it's allies, but we wouldn't invade a country that has artillery trained on our ally's capitol and has been working to develop ballistic missiles?

Eh, I probably said something really stupid just now.  I suppose I ought to stick to talking about games.

that has artillery trained on our ally's capitol

This makes a compelling case for not invading them.  Sure, they might not hurt us, and we might curbstomp them, but they'll devastate the almost-city-state of South Korea in the process.  Remember, Seoul pretty much is South Korea.

yep
By all accounts, the south was firing live shells south (away from the north) from the island during training exercies. The north also reguarly shells the water around these disputed islands aswell. Maybe they just missed...
Edit: though reports are saying that most shells landed in the Military compound. And the shelling probably wouldn't be that inaccurate.

Can't forget Starcraft. Seoul and SC, that is pretty much SK.
