Was that 5-10 crit chance before or after Luck was taken into account? Because most units shouldn't be bothered by even 10% crit chance all that much.

It was a long time ago.  The crits only procced a few times in the entire game, but when they did it was like "welp, guess I'll play this chapter again".

After adding horse archers into the game, I decided to playtest that one unit heavily...

...Unfortunately one of the hostile civs got to Stirrups tech first whilst I was mucking about with settlements and the enemy began to mongol-horde my borders... while I was the Mongols.

But hey at least horse archers work as intended, so that's a plus!

Cave bears are strong enough to punch through fucking dwarven plate armor apparently. I feel like wildlife should have stopped mattering around level 10 or so.

The enemies scale in level, I believe those bears will matter even in Lv 100 (note, I do not own skyrim)

Enemies scale to level, but as long as you don't powerlevel, say, Speech, Lockpick, Pickpocket and Alchemy you shouldn't have any issues after a certain point.
Not like, say, encountering Shimmermist Cave at level 1 with Light Imperial armor. Live Another Life, hell ye.

The reason you rarely see enemies crit? Partly because enemy units tend to have piss-poor crit rates, due to the permadeath nature of the game for the player. In games like X-COM, enemy crit rate doesn't matter so much because your units are faceless generic grunts. In this series however, characters are unique and often plot-critical. If any random mook could one-shot your lord and force a game over, far fewer people would play Fire Emblem.

The other big reason is that when you do see an enemy with a significant crit chance, you tend to focus entirely on taking that one unit out as safely as possible.
It's also important to note that in Fire Emblem the percentage chance that you see isn't actually the true value used behind the scenes as well. So far in every non-Japan only Fire Emblem game that has been checked (so we don't know about Fates yet, but if it follows the trend then this will apply to it as well) the RNG actually works by generating two numbers and averaging them together rather than working as you would expect, causing a bell curve effect. This has warps values near the low end to be increasingly less likely to trigger, while values near the high end become almost certainties, with the effect increasing the farther you get from the middle.

Here's some (listed vs real) chances of effects triggering in any US fire emblem game for comparison:
Code: [Select]
1%  -  0.03%
10% -  2.10%
20% -  8.20%
30% - 18.30%
40% - 32.40%
50% - 50.50%
60% - 68.40%
70% - 82.30%
80% - 92.20%
90% - 98.10%
99% - 99.99%
So as we can see, even an enemy with a 10% chance of a critical still really only has a bit over a 2% chance of criticalling, and an enemy with a 20% still has only a "real" chance of 8.2% of triggering a critical. On the other hand if a character has a 80% chance of hitting in reality they have a 92.2% chance, much higher than you would expect.

I think Fates is different, myself. I've had a lot more resets due to RNG being a dick and making me miss on an 85 or something like that than in any other game, which implies to me they took True Hit out. I think I've missed on 90-something odds at least twice in this one, something that I think has happened maybe two or three other times in any other FE game I've played.

Either that or I'm actually Knoll and have no luck stat.

Gamblers First Rule: If you roll any die long enough, you will eventually lose. :P

In other more focused news I lost a game after the opposing team scored 5 goals in row when everyone piled together into the ball only for it to randomly ricochet 4-5 times before flying all of the way across the field and scoring. Needless to say, that was the end of my playing for today.

Playing outbreak: class 3 just for some quick zombie clearing fun. My five policemen were on three corners of a small English town being overrun by a modest few thousand zombies, very quickly I rallied all five together to begin retaking the streets. We went through street by street, briefly holing up with a homeowner with a shotgun, circling around the town all the way up to the outer park limits and south. We tried finding any civilians after our homeowner with a shotgun was bitten through a shattered window and realized there was a civilian on the other end of town, there were in fact 2 - the last 2 civilians alive. With disciplined fire control the undead were cleared and somewhat eerily the streets we cleared merely refilled behind us, but at the very least they did so in lower densities than we left them. Eventually we found old trails of corpses we had dispatched and realized we were getting close to the civilians.
Unfortunately just as we arrived their door finally gave in and the undead got them.
This culminated in some horrible release of pressure, with all of my policemen caught in the open in the eye of the storm.

First a bit of context, I have a mod (and that mod was further customized) to make it so that most mission timers don't start counting down until the squad is revealed.  Except as a balancing factor, I set the timers to half their normal values(which is less than the mod's built in 33% less time).  So a mission that would normally give you 10 turns to get to an objective and do what you need to do now only gives you 5 turns, but does not start counting down until the aliens know you are there.

Skyranger plopped my squad down on top of a bus depot.  Objective is on the far FAAAAR corner of the map.  I have my first guy hop down off the bus depot and..... spotted.   It seems the skyranger parked my squad of top of a occupied bus depot, and with literally no way to tell the civvies were there.  The civilians set off the alarm as they see literally my first dude hop off the roof and I am forced to attempt to sprint to the objective.  Mission is an utter failure.  One of my specialists get in range to hack the bomb'd package on the last turn but does not have enough TUs to do the hack.  4 out of 5 soldiers died trying to get to the package.   I had to abort mission.

This was immediately after a TPK at a retaliation mission.   This is now the THIRD abandoned and restarted attempt at blind ironman.  I was a god at classic x-com1 and xcom apocalypse.   How am I doing so bad?  Is it punishing me for getting bored of terror from the deep and never finishing it?
