I've heard the Wizardry series is difficult, so I'm just going to preemptively post here as I get started with Wizardry 8.

The starting zone is much harder than most of the rest of the game. Especially for... unusual party compositions.

I'm going Human Valkyrie, Lizardman Fighter, Human Ranger, the cat race Rogue, wolf race Priest, and Elf Mage.

Also; how do you use magic?? I tried pressing a bunch of buttons and couldn't figure it out.

You have to select the character you want to cast a spell, them press either "m" or click on the little book icon at the bottom of the screen.

1200 Shield Maidens holding the center, 300 Constructs at the Flanks, 100 Vine Ogres charging the front, 50 Smiths throwing fire, stone, and iron into the enemy forces, 10 Shamans doing the same with an occasion bolt of death, A horde of undead creatures of all the fallen before us, A host of Clockwork militia, And a few dozen Gargoyles.

This is the army I used to hold the Capital of Ulm against 6 seperate attacks, with another 15 smiths and a couple shaman creating more and more constructs to hold the line. I lasted 5 turns of massive siege forces before I finally lost my dominion that my temple, my prophet, and my group of 6 priests had been trying desperately to hold. It was hard fought, and I am glad to have lasted to the end as it was some of the most epic battles I have seen.

Having fun so far? I've been playing the first few hours of the game for many years now, so I'm quite heartily sick of Peragus

In my own game, Nameless One can't hit for shit. This is in spite of having rather high Dexterity and Strength (compared to Morte anyway), as well as his axe having THAC0 +1 (I'm not much in to old D&D but I know that THAC0 is basically accuracy). So when Morte got zapped by a bunch of rats, Nameless One stood there swinging at the air as his health got slowly chipped away.

THAC0 (gamefaqs, AD&D) = "To Hit Armor Class 0", i.e. the number rolled on a 20-sided die required to hit someone whose armor class is 0 (AC 10 is the default, adjusted by armor, etc.). THAC0 +1 is actually bad, since it would be raising the number you needed to hit -- just plain +1 works like you'd hope and lowers your THAC0. Apparently you only start getting bonuses to THAC0 at 17 Strength. Also, I'd make sure you're actually proficient in axes since non-proficiency gives between -2 and -5 to hit depending on class.
