Hermaphrodites are two sexes. Gender is a social/psychological construct.

Just want to pop in to say: intersex, not hermaphrodite. Hermaphrodites are *species* that have fully functioning sets of male and female sex organs on every organism. It's impossible (at least, I'm pretty sure it is) for humans to have both complete male and female sex reproductive systems; intersex people usually just have fragments of both.
