No, man, Huxley was the one who was right. Look around and be astonished by the Brave New World we're in.

I still think Linguistic Prescriptivism is the only solution to these problems. For all the "Oh I'm so progressive" of descriptivism, the costs of it are everywhere.

Imagine how much less terrible arguments would be. You could still lie and call each other terrible things and such, but at least you'd know what they meant instead of being divided by a common language.

Fuck that. Incorrect word usage should be punishable by death. Kills two birds with one stone. Or we can just mandate text-editing software that prevents you from commenting, posting, or otherwise communicating until you've dealt with its objections. Might be more efficient than mobile killing squads murdering ne'er-do-wells.

No words need to be retired. People are just jackasses and abuse language conventions, which are way too malleable.
Nah. We just live with a weird mishmash of standardized English, organic English, Creole languages, ingroup language, and cyphers; Some people don't bother to differentiate between each, or realize the difference.

Well looks like I found another word that needs to be retired.

First was "Entitled" Which is used as: You want something I don't believe you deserve.

and now we have "Smug" which is used as: You are wrong but think you are right.

That's not how people used it. You were disdainfully belittling other peoples arguments with sarcastic non-sequiters when that was said in the Ameripol Thread, rather than coherently debating points.

Why not have a statue of Moses on Capital Hill?
UUUH, because the US is a secular state.

Ohh right... I forgot the US is a melting pot society and not multicultural :P

That's the exchange you were involved in. You said something plainly wrong. The other guy then gave you the factual reason it was wrong. Then you "rebuffed" him with a statement that doesn't even make coherent sense in the context, but you imbued it with a whole lot of disdainful and smug tone.

"oh right" < sarcasm "i forgot" <= more sarcasm "the US is a melting pot society and not multicultural" < rhetorical statement that has no connection to the conversation. :P <= sarcastic emoji at the end.

Let me think why you'd do that? The most likely reason is that you couldn't resist having that last word so you spewed out some sort of nonsense post with a smug and belittling tone to it, then act like you've won. That was what was smug. Basically, you acted like a douchebag and got told off for it. now you're here complaining that you got called smug and how unfair it all is.

My brother's room is being cleared out so painting can be done on it.Part of the stuff being moved was some old wood that was under his bed.

It had what looked like some kind of dead insect larva on it. Testament to how little he bothers to clean and tidy his room. And I thought *I* was bad.

If you think that's bad, I remember about 15-20 years ago when I still owned game consoles such as the NES and Genesis, I opened them up to see the inside. I think the roaches were trying to build cities in there... and failed.

I'm amazed the consoles were still working. Before and after taking them apart.

One winter, my main PC was a laptop on a table, and next to that was a slightly higher shelf with a cloth over it. Well i noticed frequent baby roaches roaming around near the laptop and couldn't work out where they might be coming from, since this was a bedroom with no real food source nearby. Until i lifted up the tablecloth and found a live nest of hundreds of roaches, in between the tablecloth and the wood. It turns out the fan exhaust from the laptop was keeping that spot warm, but the cloth prevented them from dehydrating, so they had a warm but moist spot to live in.

I favour a mix of prescriptivism and descriptivism. If you're talking to a mate, for instance, descriptivism is grand. On more official grounds, no, do not say "ur r c00l" to your hoped-for future employer.

 - - - - the more people know the rules, the better. So long as the people know that what they're doing is butchering the language, it's fine. Mainly because they know how not to butcher it. Unironic language butchering is one of the horsemen of the apocalypse. - - - - -

This, you see, is why my family has always resorted to full-scale chemical warfare at the first sight of the things. One bug that might be a roach? Hope they're having a sale on gas.

You should count that as a blessing, because in my family any roach is a 'waterbug' and is obviously not worthy of pest control.
