Playing dwarf fortress, my first game as a peassnt, locally unimportant, rather than a demigod hearthperson.

I met a goblin spearman, and whenever I try to ask him something, I am given the reply options that he would choose.

A conversation going something like this:

Me: Tell me about your family:
Me: I have no family to speak of.
Me: How are you feeling right now?
Me: I'm doing fine.

Am I insane? Is he an eldritch horror? Would even Toady know?

Still, fun to see all the NPC dialogue options.

Thats likely because he's one of the original goblins that got created in the world gen, and just happens to not have had any children.

It happens when you try to talk to things that can't speak. Unconscious people or animals or the like. I'm not sure if normal sentients can become mute but if so that's probably it.
