My primary concern when bying beer is now ensuring that the bottle is a pop-off cap. There's a good reason, but it seems like such an odd criteria,

Nah. The reason I need a pop-off is so I can simply put more beer in the bottle later. Twist-off bottles can't be recapped.

No. That does not work with twist-off caps. Even if you manage to not shatter the bottle (Twist-off caps exert less force on the bottle, allowing manifacturers to make them thinner), it won't seal right, which results in flat beer at best.

When you make beer, it's flat. You have to bottle it with extra sugar and age it to get it carbonated.

Even better: Swallow the entire bottle, let the stomach acid burn through the bottle, and eventually all the beer will be freed and will of course be right there in your stomach, bypassing the need to drink it.
