Long story short, when the snow started melting, warning bells started to go off. When the ice chunks I had dug out started melting, I was afraid I wouldn't have enough time to build a twenty-story staircase to the top of the major river canyon I started in, so I scrambled to get all my dwarves underground and stuck a hatch cover on the cavern-entrance I dug in the middle of the river.

Now the river's thawed and I'm stuck underground. I had thought this would be a great spot to build an ice castle.

Now I think it's the PERFECT spot to build an ice castle.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

So in short, you tried making a fort out of ice, and that melted, so you made a fortress under the river or something, and the water froze again and youre stuck?
Is that right?

That would be awesome.

No, I hadn't started building that yet. I will next winter, though. I just hit first summer now.  Ice constructions don't melt, but apparently the little pseudo-rocks you get from mining out ice does before natural ice walls do.

Also there's a giant cave spider strolling around the north ends of the caverns. Fortunately there's a lot of natural chokepoints for cage traps around my little settlement, so I don't think I have to worry about being eaten before the first migrants come.

Migrants. Hmm... that'll be interesting. Maybe I'll end up with three entirely seperate sets of dwarves: Migrants that come from the west, migrants that come from the east, and my seven dwarves living in the caverns under the river (and later my seven dwarves living in the giant ice castle rising out of the river that I'll be working on every winter).

Here's a rough layout of the map. As far as terrain goes, this is probably the most appealing site I've seen since mountains stopped being vertical.

There's also a little river in the west swamp that flows into a waterfall. When the water thawed a grimeling was sitting on the river. He fell off the waterfall and died. Good laughs were had by all.

That is pretty epic.

Also, what visualizer is that you're using?

Don't forget, we are all going to want to see the progress of that ice-castle (in a visualizer). :D

And as for "i thought it said Freezing" ... in my (admittedly limited) experience, that just means the ice melts late and solidifies early.  I'm currently working on a fort where the water froze shortly after mid-autumn, despite being in a "Temperate" climate. :/  Luckily I had just dug through the wall to let water into my underground cistern (for the well) about 10 seconds before the brook froze over.

Are you bothered because it froze early, or because it froze at all?  I ask just in case you're under the mistaken impression that temperate climates (in our world or that of the dwarves) don't get ice.

Them's my favorite climates.  Variety.

I'm building an underwater fort in an embark that only thaws for one month in summer. Once it's done, I'll turn off temperature once it thaws. Works great.

Freezing areas thaw out for at least short portions of their summers. Any place that is permanently frozen becomes tundra or glacier biome. Rivers do not actually continue through such biomes because the water could never carve a river out of the stone what with how it would halt as ice tiles. A very small selection of locations next to these biomes may lie within a temperature range that prevents bodies of water from thawing but which suffers a short period of green when the snow melts.

Not bothered in the least.  I just expected to have at least another month before everything froze over and was worried for a moment that my dorfs didn't get the water flowing in time when I saw things start to freeze. :)

Agreed. :D

My outpost liason came with the caravan across the frozen river (it freezes in early autumn) but he decided to leave through the caverns and was promptly strangled by a troll. Do liasons get replaced in 31.16?

Yes and in fact because of a bug you will get an entirely new liason every single year.
