In general, you don't actually need artifact-grade blues. Masterwork is enough for overkill(excluding addy hammers). So if your possessed(not fey, but even then) weaponsmith grabs it for a magma forge, post military and drain the magma.

But what if you haven't gotten your immigrant high master? What if this guy is your bestand only weaopnsmith? I've had it happen. Thisis why I prepare to savescum when presenting a moody weaponsmith with adamantine.

actually, i have never been able to build artifact animal traps.  I had a dwarf make a bone (or wooden, or something i cant remember) one, it would not show up in the build list.

I don't think you build animal traps, you just issue the 'capture live animal' order from the kennels.

EDIT: Yes. Also, I believe animal traps can be built on any surface, be it a floor, stair, or ramp.

I was unbelievably excited when my weaponsmith went fey and snagged some adamantine, and was absolutely ecstatic when a weapon named 'Cagecarnage' popped out. I mean honestly, 'Cagecarnage'? I gave it to a dwarf I named Testosticore Fantastiballs, that's how badass it was.

Sure, it was a warhammer. Sure, it wont kill anything at all.

But goddammit, he'll use it anyway.
