Create brain.
Improve tentacles. IE, make them stronger and give them hardened tips so they can penetrate the other blobs out there easier and we can move around easier.

Don't create a normal centralized brain that consists a weak point! Make a chemical/DNA based information processing system that fills the same function but is much more modular!

For the second thing, create a hibernation stage where you dry up and metabolism complexity stops. Many small animals have this and it can let them go into hibernation for centuries ad be basically invulnerable to many things that'd kill them normally.
