We don't all have valley girl accents, it's just impossible for non-americans to tell. Same as when an American listens to BBC and can't tell the difference between a brummie and a cockney Brit accent.

Some people I met can't even tell the difference between a Scottish accent and a English one.

The dialects of American English seem really distinct to Americans (the same as any other country really). You might actually need a translator between someone from the Deep South and someone from New England.  I'm fortunate that my accent is broadly understandable to just about everyone else who speaks American (though I've been told I talk fast, and I have a couple oddball words like "wooder" for water).

For the Americans out there, bonus points if you know where the water is "wooder."

I can't say I've heard too much of a shift in the "t" sound in Minnesota accents, actually, nor a broadening of the first vowel in "water."  An easy way to check for any of the Midwest family of accents more generally might be to ask someone to pronounce cot/caught or merry/marry/Mary; vowel shifts in the Midwest mean that these tend to be pronounced with the same vowel sound.  I'm going to take a completely out-there guess without any backing whatsoever and suggest New York (City, not upstate) or Joisey, based purely on what is admittedly a tin ear.
