Has there ever been a major mining accident where the company respected all the safety guidelines?

I'm sure there has been. Bad luck happens. I doubt it's often though.

One article says they plan to "keep the miners informed and busy". The president of Chile has called telling them how long they'll be down there "an imprudence".

So what happens when one of them asks "so, guys, how long are we down here?" or one of them does the math for himself?

Incidentally, how is enough oxygen to support 33 men and whatever engines they're using for power diffusing down through a hole that small/long?

You know, this is kind of suspicious....

If the cavern collapses, the first thing they should look for is evidince of explosives. Like the kind the mining company might have access to so they don't have to deal with this anymore.

I don't think the mining company has unrestricted access to the borehole right now.

Not the focus of the article, but they can't pay their wages anymore and aren't participating in the rescue effort.
Incidentally, why can't they have a drink? If nothing else send them non-alcoholic wine.
Besides, the mining company's already been criticized by the miners as being immodern. Thirty-three deaths would be all the excuse every politician even tangentially involved would need to out-witch hunt each other over the mining company. If you want to theorize, I'd peg the government as more likely to do something.

On a probably unrelated note, why are all the letters from the miners written on charred paper?

Edit: Found article.

They keep finding stacks of it, along with piles of bone meal and puddles of unidentified white substance.

My money is on hydraulic fluid. Like in elevators.

Why would it be white? Most hydraulic fluid is amber-colored. It's kind of like a really heavy cooking oil.

And where are they finding it?

According to this, some hydraulic fluid can turn white when mixed with water.

I don't think tentacle demons exude hydraulic fluid.

Perhaps they're robotic tentacle demons?
